A very popular player with fans and teammates alike, Pepper Martin was the engine that drove the famed “Gashouse Gang” of the 1930’s.

A four time All Star, Martin was also a three time leader in Stolen Bases (although he won them with only 26, 23 and 23 swipes respectively) and he would provide solid hitting with a .298 Batting Average for the Cardinals, the only team he ever played for.  Martin was at his best in the 1931 World Series where he batted .500 with an OPS of 1.330 and reporters at the time mentioned that it was the play of Martin that secured the World Series win over the Philadelphia Athletics.  Martin also helped the Cardinals win the World Series in 1934 where he batted “only” .355.

As popular as he was, Martin is penalized on this list for being a poor defensive player, and as we always state on these lists, regardless of the sport that defense matters.  We have a feeling that is a dead horse we are going to keep beating no matter how many baseball lists we do.

The Cardinals chose Martin for their franchise Hall of Fame in 2017.
