The Gold Glove award was first awarded in 1957, and that year he was not split among the leagues. Lollar was the inaugural winner, and he would win the first two in the American League. He was also one of the best play-callers in baseball, and he could handle a pitching staff as good as anyone.
Berra was a much better hitter, but Lollar held his own. He would have five 100 Hit seasons with two 20 Home Run seasons for the White Sox. Lollar would have six All-Star seasons for Chicago and overall had 1,122 Hits and 124 Home Runs for the Chi-Sox.
