48. Ron Hextall

It is funny how Ron Hextall may be known more for the one goal (though he did do it again in a playoff game) he scored as opposed to the many he prevented. Hextall was a fearless player who had no qualms leaving the net showcasing his skating acumen. In addition to being one of the game’s most mobile netminders, he was also among the most aggressive. Opposing players were wary of Hextall’s stick as he was known to slash at anyone who dared cross his path.

In his magical rookie season, Hextall won the Conn Smythe (in a losing effort with the Flyers) and the prestigious Vezina Trophy. As amazing as that season was, Hextall never reached that level again. He had many good seasons, but never another great one. That fact alone; may keep the NHL’s first third generation star out of the Hall.

Not a 1st pick, but if there's a lean year, put him in.

Flyers fan here. I don't think that's ever going to happen. Only 6 goalies have been inducted since Hextall retired and one of those six retired four years before Hextall's rookie season. All the goalies ahead of him on this listing were peers of his - Richter, Vernon, Barrasso, Joseph, Osgood, Moog, Vanbiesbrouc k, and Khabibulin - and most have better cases. There's a line somewhere in that grouping and Hextall is almost certainly below it.

He may not have changed the style of goalies as much as Roy did, but he was a guy people were pointing to in the era as an example to follow with regards to puckhandling . Not a 1st pick, but if there's a lean year, put him in.

No goalie had a bigger heart with Hextall. Looking back ; if Pelle Lindbergh has not died, Hexy probably would not have been with the Orange and Black.
