You didn’t watch a Jim Duggan match to see a wrestling clinic. You watch Jim Duggan to see a fight. Hacksaw was the tough guy at the end of the bar who would have your back and police the situation of need be. He wouldn’t come at you with arm bars or wristlocks but would hit you with closed fists and clotheslines. He carried a 2X4 in one hand and the American Flag in the other, and he defended the country as well as your neighborhood. As such, Duggan was at his best in the WWF as the man who stood up to whatever “foreign” evil was invading the big league promotion. He was the blue collar brawler that you could identify with as everyone American wrestling fan seemed to have a friend (or wished they did) like “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan.
