There are some bands that seem poised to break through the stratosphere but for whatever reason just can’t. The Cult seems to be one of those bands that while although they were very successful; they just seemed to fall short of what many thought they could have been.
The Cult had gone through a few style changes and by 1985 they struck gold with their first big album, Love. With this album and their subsequent work they had the rare ability to crossover to multiple audiences. They drew from enough from earlier Metal acts to appeal to the Metal and Hard Rock set, they had enough Post Punk roots to draw in New Wave listeners and they were just mystical enough and had a touch enough of the gothic look to appeal to the “freak” set. Band infighting and an inability to reach the Grunge crowd kept curtailed their popularity in the 90’s. Had they found a way to do so, their chances for induction would likely be much stronger.
