75. Bobby McFerrin
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Highest Billboard Position:
#1 in 1988

Number ones songs are full of unlikely hits; every year seems to have one.  When Bobby McFerrin unexpectedly hit number one with one of his A Capella songs, he was likely happy for a moment….until despite his vast musical ability, everywhere he went he became only the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” guy.

The song is actually quite the achievement, as this was the first song ever to hit number one without the use of an instrument.  Every sound you hear is actually McFerrin’s voice.  We may be able to appreciate this technical achievement by McFerrin, the facts remain that this song does not make us happy at all.  It is actually quite annoying, and wants to make listeners go postal if they are stuck in a confined space stuck with this song playing.
