1976. Sigh. As AM radio permitted sappy ballad after ballad to clog their airwaves, few were more bile rising than what the former member of Sha Na Na, Henry Gross, unleashed on the unknowing public.
Many a listener empathized for the singer bemoaning his beloved “Shannon” and how she is “gone”. Now with Shannon being a popular name, there were instances of lovelorn teenagers crying over a lady of the same name who got away. Sadly, like many songs, the general public will pick up on a verse or two and generally not absorb the meat of the tune. Those who did so in this case would realize that this song is about his dead dog named Shannon. Yep, he is singing about his dead dog and this isn’t even a country song. The death of a loved family pet is certainly a cause for grief but writing a song about it and crooning about her ashes is just plain wrong. It is ok to love your pets….as long as is you don’t love your pets.
