We lost a great one today.

Former Minnesota Vikings Defensive End Jim Marshall passed away at the age of 87.

A National Champion at Ohio State, Marshall left college early to play professionally in Canada for a year and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1960.  That stint would also last a year, as he was dealt to the Vikings in 1961, and it was there that he became a superstar.

Marshall went on to start the next 270 Games for the Vikings, setting a since-broken record of 283 Games Played.  A member of the famed “Purple People Eaters”, Marshall played in all four of Minnesota’s bowl games, was twice named to the Pro Bowl, and recorded 130.5 Sacks over a 20-year career.

For every regular-season game, we anointed the best five players with descending points, 5-4-3-2-1. 

We know the following:

• The top players for the MLB NIHOF Cup are not always the best in the league, as injuries keep players out of games, and a premium on staying healthy can help pile up points. It also does not hurt to be a top player on an average or mediocre team, as they can amass Cup points more easily than elite players on loaded squads.
• In Baseball, it is more common than in Basketball and Hockey for a player to accrue points with a single Home Run in a game, which favors position players. Starting Pitchers have a hard time with approximately 30-35 Starts and throwing fewer innings than previous generations. This is also true for closers not made for this process.
• Please remember that this is NOT necessarily who we think were the best players this year and does not reflect overall consistency. Treat this the way we did: as a fun process and more of a compilation of temporary statistical domination.

Leach may not have the “.600 Winning Percentage,” but his dynamic offensive schemes, which feature a blitzing “Air Raid” style that has influenced many other coaches and levels of football, show a Hall of Fame resume.  He is not the only man who could benefit from the new rules.

Les Miles, who coached LSU to the 2007 National Championship, saw 37 of his wins vacated due to a recruiting violation, causing his winning percentage to drop from .665 (145-73) to .597 (108-73).

We would not be surprised to see both of them nominated for the 2027 Class.
