Yes, we know that this is taking a while!

As many of you know, we here at Notinhalloffame.com are slowly generating the 50 of each major North American sports team.  That being said, we have existing Top 50 lists out and we always consistently look to update them when we can and based on necessity.  As such, we are very happy to present our pre-2021 revision of our top 50 Carolina Panthers of all-time.

As for all of our top 50 players in football we look at the following: 

1.  Advanced Statistics.

2.  Traditional statistics and how they finished in the NFL. 

3.  Playoff accomplishments.

4.  Their overall impact on the team and other intangibles not reflected in a stat sheet.

McCaffrey had a decent rookie year, a good second year, and a fantastic third season, where he led the NFL in Yards From Scrimmage (2,392) and Touchdowns (19).  The Running Back also rushed for over 1,000 Yards and caught passes for over 1,000 Yards, a rare feat!  Due to injury, he could not follow up in the two years that followed, but when he was healthy in 2022 and returned to Pro Bowl form, he was surrounded by a team that threw in the towel and traded him to San Francisco.  McCaffrey is one of the most versatile Running Backs, but his position is meant for ailments. 

In 2023, we said, “What he does in 2024 might decide whether he has a shot at the Hall”. McCaffrey’s response was to win his first Rushing Title (1,459) and Offensive Player of the Year while also topping the NFL in Yards From Scrimmage (2,023) and Touchdowns (21) for the second time in his career.   How was that followed up?   With another injury, limiting him to four Games in 2024.

Approaching 30, McCaffrey feels like either a Hall of Famer or a player destined to spend half of his career on the IL.  If Canton calls, this season is critical.

Selected eighth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Stanford, Christian McCaffrey arrived in Charlotte as a hyper-versatile offensive engine. It didn't take long for "CMC" to prove that his elite college production translated seamlessly to the pros, quickly establishing himself as the ultimate dual-threat weapon in modern football.

McCaffrey revolutionized positional versatility in the contemporary era. By integrating exceptional vision and swift change-of-direction agility with a comprehensive route tree typical of wide receivers, he demonstrated equal proficiency lining up on the perimeter or in the slot, as well as executing handoffs from the backfield. McCaffrey exhibited superior contact balance and elusive dead-leg jukes, enabling him to evade defenders in confined spaces, thereby presenting a significant challenge for opposing linebackers assigned to cover him in open areas.

McCaffrey commenced his professional career in 2017 with noteworthy achievements, establishing a franchise rookie record of 80 receptions while accumulating 1,086 yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns. His performance improved significantly in 2018, rushing for 1,098 yards and securing 107 receptions for an additional 867 yards through passing. His total of 1,965 yards from scrimmage merited him the Second-Team All-Pro designation, as he ranked highly in league-wide production.

That 2018 campaign was merely the appetizer for one of the greatest individual seasons by a running back in NFL history. In 2019, McCaffrey essentially was the Panthers' entire offense, operating at a level of dual-threat efficiency rarely seen in the league.

Facing an immense workload, McCaffrey accumulated 1,387 rushing yards accompanied by 15 rushing touchdowns, as well as 116 receptions totaling 1,005 receiving yards and four touchdowns. In doing so, he inscribed his name into professional football history. He became merely the third player in NFL history to attain 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards within a single season, joining Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig. His 116 receptions surpassed his own NFL single-season record for receptions by a running back. Additionally, his 2,392 scrimmage yards led the entire NFL and represented the third-highest single-season total in league history, surpassed only by Chris Johnson and Marshall Faulk, while his 19 total touchdowns were the highest in professional football that year.

His dominance was so complete that Associated Press voters made history: McCaffrey became the first player ever selected as a First-Team All-Pro at two positions in the same year, earning the honor at both Running Back and Flex.

Over the next two years, injuries to his ankle, shoulder, and hamstring limited him to just ten games in 2020 and 2021. McCaffrey regained full health in 2022, showcasing his usual game-changing skills during the first six weeks. But as Carolina decided to reset their roster, the team traded their star running back to the San Francisco 49ers in October 2022 for a substantial draft pick haul. He earned a Pro Bowl selection that season and continued to perform at a high level with the 49ers.

In his time as a Panther, McCaffrey appeared in 64 regular-season games, amassing 3,980 rushing yards, 3,292 receiving yards (390 receptions), and 50 total touchdowns. His 7,272 scrimmage yards and 113.6 scrimmage yards per game stand as the gold standard for versatility in franchise history.
