gold star for USAHOF

40. Tim Connolly

40. Tim Connolly

The New York Islanders took Tim Connolly, an American-born Center with the Fifth Overall Pick, in 1999.  Two years later, at the 2001 Draft, he was traded within the state to Buffalo for Michael Peca, and like the person he was traded for, injuries would come to define his career.

Connolly had 70 Points in his first two seasons with Buffalo, but a concussion in the 2003 preseason kept him out the entire year.  With the lockout happening the year after, Sabres fans had to wait until the 2005-06 campaign to see their plucky Center.  Connolly had 55 Points in his return season, but again a concussion kept him out of another year (2007-08).

Connolly earned a reputation for being fragile as hip and back problems plagued him over the next two seasons, but he was at nearly a Point-per-Game pace when he played.  He had his best year in 2009-10, with 65 Points in 73 Games, but his play slipped, and the Sabres let him go to Toronto as a Free Agent in 2011.  Connolly only played one year for the Maple Leafs and a year in the minors before retiring.

With the Sabres, Connolly scored 320 Points, a good number, but injuries kept him from being so much more.
