gold star for USAHOF

33. John Van Boxmeer

33. John Van Boxmeer

Beginning his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens, John Van Boxmeer was exiled to the then-hockey wasteland of the Colorado Rockies.  A reprieve came for Van Boxmeer when he was traded before the 1979-80 Season for Rene Robert, and the Defenseman became a Buffalo Sabre, which is where he had the best stats of his career.

A good two-way player, Van Boxmeer had 51 Points in his first year in Sabres blue, and he had a career-high 9.9 Point Shares.  He improved that production with 69 and 68 Points over the next two years, which was his best two-year run.  His output dropped to 27 Points in 1982-84, and Van Boxmeer suddenly became expendable.

Van Boxmeer’s tenure with the Sabres when the team waived, and he was picked up by Quebec, where he played one final NHL year.  With the Sabres, he finished in the top ten in Defensive Point Shares twice and had 215 Points over 294 Games.
