gold star for USAHOF

34. Rob Ray

34. Rob Ray

Rob Ray was not expected to score much.  What he was asked to do was to use his fists and intimidation to clear a path for his teammates to score.

Ray is a tricky player to rank, as he has a negative Point Share (-6.3), and as a forward, he only averaged 0.10 points per game.  Those numbers are bad, but again, that was not what he was there to do.  Ray’s presence on the ice gave Sabres stars the confidence to play their game, and he was a locker room leader.  In appreciation of that, Ray won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1999.

Ray has the distinction of forcing a rule change, as during fights, his jersey and shoulder pads were not fastened; thus, his fighting opponent could not clutch and grab, giving Ray an advantage.  The NHL cracked down on this, and if a jersey is not properly tied down, a game misconduct will be enforced.

A two-time leader in Penalty Minutes with 3,207 in total, Ray played 889 of his 900 NHL Games with the Sabres.
