From Finland, Koivu brought a lot of grit and determination immediately to the Montreal Canadians and in his fifth season he was named the team captain, a huge honor in terms of this organization. Koivu would suffer a major setback when he contracted cancer but he would beat it quickly and would win the Bill Masterton Trophy, an award that could not have possibly gone to anyone else. Also a King Clancy Award winner, Koivu recorded over 800 Points in his NHL career.
Koivu’s contributions to the Finnish National Team cannot be discounted. He is a four time Olympic Medalist (1 Silver and 2 Bronze) and also was a Silver Medalist in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
