As a Detroit native, I think the physical distance between Detroit and Canton, Ohio is closer than the distance between Ford and how much he deserves to be inducted. 1 playoff win since he became owner? And that's top 10?Replace his name with George Young and it's an excellent starting point.
Ziggy....Great Post!!!!We have been kicking around expanding our list to the top 250, and will likely do so in the coming year. Nobis, Banks and Smith would easily be on that list. As for Larsen, we admit we really didn;t consider him for the next group. Perhaps we should reconsider! As for Les Richter, we didn;t include him initially, and I think we made a mistake on that one. Should he not get in, you can bet you will see him on our next list.As for the others, we considered....its a long one!!!!!!Here are some that almost made our cut (and will be on an expanded list)Bobby BoydLomas BrownDarren WoodsonSteve JordanJoe KleckoEd Too Tall JonesLarry GranthamJake ScottJust to name a few...... I have a feeling by Spring you will see this expand to a list of 250!
As you've said, CC, compiling such lists is not an easy task. Nobis was the name that stood out the most to me as being missing from the 100. A 2011 comparison would be Clay Matthews Jr. as to how highly regarded he was right away in his NFL career.
Considering all the great players to come and go in the history of the NFL, it is extremely difficult to make a list of the top 100. There are about 25-30 that have to appear on the list (Carter, Kramer, Kennedy, etc) and I think you got all of those guys, but after that it's anybody's guess. Honestly, you could make a list of the top 500 and there'd probably be enough quality players to fill out that list. I think the people at NotInHallofFame did an excellent job with the list, I was just saying some players that I would have added. You may never have to end up putting Les Richter on the list. There is a very good chance he will get into the hall of fame in 2011, along with fellow veteran nominee Chris Hanburger.P.S. I still think Jim Marshall should be in the top 20. He had excellent numbers over a long period of time, he was an ironman, and although he didn't have one year where he was completely dominant, you could make a legitimate arguement that he ment more to those Vikings teams than Alan Page or Carl Eller, both who are in the hall of famer (and deserve to be in the hall of fame.)
Ziggy, Its funny you say that as when we did this, we joked that we could easily sibstitute the numbers 50 -100 for who we had on tap from 101 to 150. Once you get past the top 40, it amazes us how little seperates the next batch.
So, who do you think the top 10 non-players that aren't in the hall of fame are? My list: Tom Flores, Jimmy Johnson, George Seifert, Dan Reeves (although apparently he still wants to coach), Don Coryell, Art Modell, Edward DeBartolo, William Clay Ford, Paul Tagliabue, and Ed Sabol.
Ziggy,I love those ten! I think anyone would be hardpressed to come up with a better list than that. The more research i do on Sabol, the more I think he should be in this year. Do you think if Bill Cowher never coaches another game, would be an HOF candidate?
Yes, I do. He led the Steelers to numerous years of contending, and did win a Super Bowl. If he never coaches another game, his first year of elligibility is 2012. I don't think he'll go in then, but I think he'll get in eventually asuming he doesn't come back. Bill Parcells and Marty Schottenheimer are also elligible in 2012. I think Parcells should be a first-ballot, and Schottenheimer will get in eventually.
Oh yeah, and one more thing. I don't remember seing Ken Riley on your list. The dude is fifth on the all-time interceptions list, but he never gets any respect. I don't blame you for not including him, since nobody really knows him that well, I'm just wondering.
