44. Homer Jones

Homer Jones was two picks away from being “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 1963 NFL Draft, but he initially signed with the Houston Oilers of the AFL, where he could stay close to home.  That move didn’t work out, as he was cut in training camp, but the Wide Receiver would find work with the team that drafted him in the NFL, the New York Giants.

Jones made the team but saw little action until 1965, where he had 709 Yards with six TDs.  From 1966 to 1968, Jones was one of the most dependable receivers in football, eclipsing the 1,000 Yard mark and finishing in the top four each year. Jones led the NFL in Touchdowns (14) in 1967, and he was a Pro Bowl that year and the season after.

Jones' biggest impact on the game was when he became the first player to spike the ball after scoring a Touchdown, making him the "Godfather of Touchdown Celebrations."   The product of Texas Southern was traded to Cleveland before the 1970 Season, where he played one more year.  With the Giants, Jones had 4,991 Yards from Scrimmage with 36 Touchdowns.
