16. Deron Cherry

Deron Cherry was a team MVP at Rutgers where he was both a Safety and a Punter.  He went undrafted in 1981 however was signed as a Free Agent by the Chiefs where he attempted to become the team’s Punter.  It didn’t stick but he was brought back to tryout at Safety and the rest as they say is history.

In Cherry’s third season (1983) he would become the Chiefs starting Free Safety and he was named to the Pro Bowl hat season and the five after.  That span included three First Team All Pro Selections and two Second Team All Pro Selections and his overall career in professional football (all of which were in Kansas City) he would record 50 Interceptions.

Off of the field Cherry was known for his philanthropy and community service and he would be named the Whizzer White NFL Man of the Year in 1988.  The Chiefs chose him for their Hall of Fame in 1998.
