The defensive identity of the Arizona Cardinals during their historic Super Bowl XLIII run was forged in the disruptive energy of a third-round draft steal out of Florida State. Drafted 64th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft due to pre-draft character concerns that dropped his stock, Darnell Dockett arrived in the desert with a massive chip on his shoulder. He stepped onto the field and instantly evolved into one of the most explosive, penetration-style interior defensive linemen of his era.

Dockett had a quick, lethal first step that enabled him to penetrate gaps before offensive guards could establish their pass protection. Mainly functioning as an interior pass rusher, he used a combination of upper-body strength and aggressive hand techniques to collapse the pocket from the inside. Additionally, Dockett played with a relentless, fierce attitude that created an aggressive physical presence for the entire front seven.

His debut in 2004 made an immediate impression by securing a starting role and earning PFWA All-Rookie honors after recording 3.5 sacks and 39 tackles. His rise to elite status occurred in 2007, when he excelled at penetrating interior blocking schemes, achieving a career-high 9.0 sacks and 58 tackles, which led to his first Pro Bowl selection.

Dockett's standout moment came during the 2008 postseason on the sport's biggest stage. In Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he showcased an exceptional individual performance, tying the NFL Super Bowl record by sacking Ben Roethlisberger 3.0 times. His dominant play continued into the 2009 season, where he moved between defensive tackle and end, recording 7.0 sacks, earning Second-Team All-Pro honors and his second Pro Bowl invitation. He secured a third Pro Bowl selection in 2010, solidifying his role as a key interior defender early in the decade.

After missing the 2014 season due to a torn ACL, Dockett briefly joined division rival San Francisco in 2015. He was released before the start of the regular season and decided to return to Arizona, signing a ceremonial one-day contract in 2016 to officially retire as a lifelong member of the organization.
