While playing college ball at TCU, Sherrill Headrick was not drafted by either the National Football League or the American Football League in 1960, when the American Football League was beginning operations. Headrick was eventually signed by the Dallas Texans, where he was a First Team All-Pro in his first three seasons and a significant force on the Texans' 1962 AFL Championship team.
Headrick and the rest of the Texans relocated to Kansas City, and the now-named Chiefs remained an AFL power with Headrick a force in the defensive interior. Headrick earned two more AFL All-Star selections (1965 & 1966), and in the latter year, he helped the Chiefs win the AFL Championship. He would finish his career with a season with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968.
