The Pro Football Hall of Fame is a passion of ours, and as we are entering the 2025 NFL Season, we are pleased to announce the update of our Top 100 Active Players based on their current Hall of Fame candidacy.

Note that we base this list on what they have done, not what their potential is, so, for example, Micah Parsons, who most people think is the best Inside Linebacker in the game, is not ranked as high as players who might be less talented, but have achieved more through longevity.

2025 Pre-Season Rank #68, 2024: Pre-Season Rank: #121.  Peak Period: 2021-25*

Standing at 6'5” and 330 pounds, Penei Sewell can state that going into 2025, he is the most athletic and explosive Tackle in the game of football.  One of the rare Linemen that is dominant on the run and pass, his power and speed have made him and many around him All-Pros.  Only a five-year veteran, Sewell has already been named a First Team All-Pro three times, with a four-year Pro Bowl streak.  Who is to say he can't do the same think in the next five years?

*Sewell has only played five seasons.

The 2023 National Football League Season begin tonight, and we are ready with our revised list of the top 150 active (or hoping to be) players based on their existing Hall of Fame resume.

This is our fourth pre-season monitor, and you can find it all here.

A quick synopsis shows that we have the following:

19 Quarterbacks are ranked, including a brand new number one overall, Aaron Rodgers, now of the New York Jets. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes rocketed to #10 and Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos regresses to #11.

Only 12 Running Backs are ranked, with no player in the top 25 overall. The surprising top player at this position is Alvin Kamara of New Orleans.

Wide Receivers are more represented with 21 on the list. Julio Jones is the only one in the top ten (we still rank Free Agents who we think have a shot to return) with three others in (#18 Tyreek Hill, #20 DeAndre Hopkins and #24 Davante Adams) in the top 25.

Only 5 Tight Ends are ranked with Travis Kelce at #7.

22 Offensive Lineman are on the list, including three players in the top ten (#6 Zack Martin, #8 Trent Williams and #9 Jason Peters). There are two other players in the top 25 with Jason Kelce (#12) and Tyron Smith (#16).

On the defensive side, there are 23 Defensive Lineman, led by the Rams’ Aaron Donald, who is ranked #2 overall. Other Defensive Lineman in the top 25 are #17 Cameron Jordan, #19 Calais Campbell and #25 Ndamukong Suh.

With the Linebackers, we have the only position where there are two in the top five, which are Seattle’s Bobby Wagner and Buffalo’s Von Miller who are #3 and #4 respectively. There are 19 overall, and two more in the top 25, #14 Khalil Mack and #15 T.J. Watt.

There are 13 Cornerbacks who are ranked, led by Patrick Peterson of the Steelers at #13. There is one other Cornerback in the top 25 with Jalen Ramsey at #23.

At the Safety position, there are 12 who are ranked, but it takes you all the way to #63 (Minkah Fitzpatrick) before we see our first one.

There are five Special Teams players, led by Ravens Place Kicker, Justin Tucker at #23.

And in 2024, he became a champion.

Jalen Hurts and the tush push brought the Philadelphia Eagles their second Super Bowl, and while he has only been in the NFL for five years, it feels like a long time coming.

Jalen Hurts was the runner-up for the 2019 Heisman, and there were a few questions that surrounded him in the following draft. There should not have been.  Hurts won the Bert Bell Award in 2022 and has an AV/G well over the MPA in his brief career, which, based on modern metrics, a QB needs to have to sniff Canton.  Hurts has the skills and talent around him to become the first Quarterback to rush for 100 Touchdowns (unless Josh Allen beats him to it), and this does not take into account his excellent passing skills.

Whenever a QB wins a Super Bowl, the Hall of Fame buzz accelerates, and the Eagles are a squad that could win several.  The scary thing is that Jalen is just entering his prime.

Here is what we wrote about Micah Parsons last year:

“What he does in 2025 and beyond will skyrocket Parsons up this list and into Hall of Fame territory, and we wager it will be incredible.”

And it was, though not without cost.

After four incredible seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Parsons was shockingly moved to Green Bay, and he dominated in Lambeau the same way he did in Arlington. Going into Week 15 last year, he was already at 12.5 Sacks, and was disrupting the minds of opposing Offensive Coordinators, but he tore his ACL, which ended his season; though he still was named a First Team All-Pro for the third time and was third in voting for Defensive Player of the Year.   He did skyrocket up this list as predicted, but that won’t happen in 2026.

With the exception of the injury, Parsons’ first five years were about as good as you can get, and there is nobody with less experience ahead of him on this list.  He is not due back until mid-season, and hopefully, for all football fans, he returns to pre-injury form.

2025 Pre-Season Rank #42, 2024 Pre-Season Rank #52,  2023: Pre-Season Rank #83. Peak Period: 2019-23

The explosive Nick Bosa is one of a handful of players who won the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year (2019) and later the AP Defensive Player of the Year (2022), a combination of trophies that can pave the way to a bronze bust.

The cornerstone of a defense that has been to two Super Bowls, Bosa’s five-year peak is impacted by an injury that held him to two Games in 2020.   When he is healthy, Bosa is among the best pass-rushers in football, though it is a position that needs constant attention for the Hall, as his stature has shrunk over the last 36 months, especially with last season's torn ACL.

This season is critical for his Hall of Fame chances, as depsite the DROY and DPOY, this is a hard Hall to get into.

Ja’Marr Chase has been money since the Cincinnati Bengals took him fifth overall in 2021 and reunited him with his college Quarterback, Joe Burrow.

A Pro Bowl selection in all five seasons, Chase’s best season was in 2024, when he won the Wide Receiver’s Triple Crown (127 Receptions, 1,708 Yards, and 17 Touchdowns) and was named First-Team All-Pro.  He was third in Offensive Player of the Year that season, and he followed that up last season with a second First Team All Pro nod.

Moving forward, there is no reason to think that his second half-decade in the sport could be just as good as his first, and barring injury, we project he will crack the top 30 of this list next year.

What a joy he is to watch!

After a good rookie year in 2020, Taylor exploded, leading the NFL in Rushing Yards (1,811) and Rushing Touchdowns (18), and a Running Back needs a year like this to place you on the tip of the tongue of Hall of Fame voters, regardless of how early in your career you do it.  In 2022, Taylor had a great start to the season but was held to 11 Games due to ankle issues. In 2023, he held out, delaying his start until that year.

We said two years ago that one monstrous season doesn’t make a Hall of Fame career, and Taylor would have to reclaim that 2021 magic for a serious Hall of Fame list jump.   He had a bounce-back 1,431-yard/11-touchdown year and returned to the Pro Bowl in 2024, but last season he was better, with a third Pro Bowl year and league-leading 18 TDs along with 1,963 YFS. 

As such, he vaulted up the list and can again if he has another great year.

Davis, a veteran player, has experienced a significant rise in the second half of his career.  From 2019 to 2023, Davis was an All-Pro (one First Team and four Second Team), and his versatility and leadership were the keys to some very good New Orleans defenses in the early 2020s. 

As good as he has been in his 30s, he turns 38 this season, and his Hall of Fame resume looks to be “too little, too late.”  He's back with the NFL team where he started it all, the New York Jets, and if he continues to age like wine, who knows!

Since he debuted in 2020, Justin Jefferson has accumulated more Receiving Yards (8,480) than any other Wide Receiver,  and nobody else is within 1,000.

In his first three seasons, Jefferson won the Offensive Rookie of the Year (2020), the Offensive Player of the Year (2022), and earned three Pro Bowls and two First Team All-Pros.  The three seasons after have been more challenging; although he was chosen for a fourth Pro Bowl in 2024, he missed seven games due to injury in 2023, and last year, despite being healthy, he had the misfortune of having the ineffective J.J. McCarthy as his Quarterback, leading to only 2 TDs and 1,048 Yards.

Regardless of last season’s woes, he has a new thrower in Kyler Murray, who comes to Minnesota with a lot to prove.  Jefferson should be elite as always, and as he is still in his prime, the yardage will continue to pile up.

When you think of the recent success of the Kansas City Chiefs, you immediately think of Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the offense, but you have to stop the ball, and in the 2020s, very few can do it at the level of Chris Jones.

Versatile, consistent, and quick like a cat, Jones does it all.  The defensive stud of Kansas City’s five Super Bowl appearances, Jones combines the power of a pass rusher and the speed of a run-blocker to make a perfect defensive beast.  Pundits agree Jones had a three-year streak of First Team All-Pro Selections (2022-24) and is on a seven-year Pro Bowl streak.  The scary thing for opposing offenses is that Jones is still at his peak.

Would KC have won their last three Super Bowls without Jones?  Not a chance.

Smith was a Second-Team All-Pro for two years in a row (2020-21), but as good as he was, the Bears weren’t, and Smith and Chicago grew disenchanted with each other. Chicago traded Smith to the Ravens during the season, and it started the best run of his career. 

In the year he was traded (2022), Smith had career highs in Combined Tackles (169) and Solo Tackles (103), and was rewarded with his First Team All-Pro.  Smith has since followed that with his second and third First Team All-Pro selections, and his domination in the middle has continued the Baltimore defense's stellar reputation.

Last season, the streak of at least First Team All-Pro selections and 150 Combined Tackles ended, but he was a Pro Bowl selection for the fourth straight year.  His “down year” is still a dream season for most Middle Linebackers, and there is no reason to think that he won’t be one of the best MLBs in 2026.
