Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd" was certainly ahead of its time in showing how a charismatic speaker could use the medium of radio and later television to achieve certain cult status in the United States.
In his film, Kazan tapped a then relative newcomer in Andy Griffith who played an Arkansas drifter who was plucked from a county jail by a radio station who thought his humor and folksy demeanor would make him a hit. It did, and his combination of spoken word and down-home songs make him not just a star but a cult figure. I don't think we are giving much away by saying you know what usually happens to cult figures.
