Contest: 2023 Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- Round 1
Discovered by Chuck Berry and Alan Freed (who played themselves in the film), we learn through flashbacks just how they discovered him and how he became a rock star. Freed organizes a contest (later admittedly a publicity stunt) to find a suitable artist to become "Johnny Melody," and he comes into possession a demo tape by the poor but determined young man, who coincidentally is also named Johnny. Freed and Berry are impressed with what they here in the demo, and Freed begins playing the track, "My Love is Strong" on his radio show, hoping the singer will make himself known as, of course, Johnny never put his contact info on the package. You know how this ends, right? Johnny gets the hit song, and of course, he gets the girl.
