London Fletcher was a tackling machine who had accumulated over 2,000 Tackles in the National Football League. This is where Fletcher’s best chance for the Hall lies, as he was only a four-time Pro Bowl selection, a number that, right or wrong, does matter. Fletcher, however, does hold a resume with all those tackles, longevity, a Super Bowl Ring with the Rams, and a reputation as a locker room leader and off-field good guy.
For our money, nobody more intriguing was first eligible in 2019, and his overall resume is one of the most interesting on this list. Whether or not he ever receives any PFHOF consideration, the fact that he accomplished so much as an undrafted player from John Carroll will forever be impressive.
One of the best Place Kickers of his day, David Akers, had to wait a little to prove his worth in the NFL. Akers went undrafted out of Louisville in 1997, and after trying out for the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers, the Washington Redskins signed him, but he played only one game and missed both Field Goals (both 48-plus).
The Philadelphia Eagles gave him a shot, and after a stint with Berlin in NFL Europe, he would prove to be the Eagles' most dependable player for over a decade. Akers went to six Pro Bowls and was a First Team All-Pro twice. He would make the Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary Team and the 2000s All-Decade Team. He finished his career with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions and held the record for the most Points in Pro Bowl history with 57.
Undrafted in 1999 out of North Texas, Brian Waters defied the odds to become a successful Offensive Guard in the National Football League, most notably with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was named to five Pro Bowls (plus one more with New England) and made two First Team All-Pro teams. The 2009 Walter Payton Man of the Year winner is historically the only AFC Offensive Lineman to have won an Offensive Player of the Week Award.
Making four consecutive Pro Bowls and a First Team All-Pro Selection, Asante Samuel was an integral part of a pair of Super Bowl Championships for the New England Patriots. Samuel led the National Football League in Interceptions twice, had 51 overall, and became one of the more recognized Defensive Backs in the NFL.
