No way. Power chords, passable at best lyrics, nothing new or innovative. And how many of their songs do you ACTUALLY know aside from the 2 or 3 that have received far more radio play than they deserve.

"Just because my songs are played on the radio so much you would gnaw your arm off to get away from the radio, that's no reason to not be in the Hall of Fame." - Peter Frampton

OK, kidding aside, that's pretty much how it was when Machine Head/Made in Japan were new. And, for the next 20-odd years, if you walked into a music store on a Saturday, you were going to hear some kid playing Smoke on the Water. How many budding guitarists started with that in their repertoire? If that isn't influence, I don't know what is.

I am not sure how old these other commenters are, but back then FM was boss. You wanted FM play not AM. Even the grateful dead didn't offer any AM pop hits. Richie Blackmore was excellent, and Machine Head, Hi way Star, at full volume cruisin was a trip. Speed King from Deep Purple in Rock should be in for its ultimate energy

They are long overdue to receive that honour! After all: They are one of the founder bands of Hard Rock in the first place! :-)

They're OK, but they only had 3 top 40 hits. They didn't produce enough to get in.
