If you are a wrestling fan, chances are you watched the film, “Ready to Rumble” and might have been embarrassed that you were a fan of the pseudo-sport. We know we did, and a big part of that was the bungling (even more so than his usual roles) of super fan, Gordie Boggs (David Arquette). The worst part of this movie, was not his performance but rather the cross promotion by World Championship Wrestling, by which Arquette won the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Fans of wrestling are still shaking their heads over that one.
The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Waterboy (2000)
Actor: David Arquette
Role Portrayed: Superfan
Why you should vote for him: You are the lone person who celebrated David Arquette’s title win.
Why you should not vote for him: This is not a great film…or even a mediocre one.
Gloria Clemente. She may not have been able to sink a jump shot, nor could she hustle a dime on the basketball court, but as the unfortunate girlfriend of Billy Hoyle in “White Men Can’t Jump” a large part of us had to wonder why Woody Harrelson (Hoyle) couldn’t get his act together because my God, did Rosie Perez (Clemente) ever look better than she did in that movie? And that accent….. Sorry, give us a moment here…. Damn!
Okay, now that we got our composure back, we loved her spunk, her attitude and the fact that she dumped the guy in the end. It was not because we had anything against Woody, but basically as a boyfriend, he was terrible, and she “stood by her man” long enough. Most movie girlfriends don’t have half the depth that Gloria Clemente did.
The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Actor: Rosie Perez
Role Portrayed: Girlfriend
Why you should vote for her: She was not a traditional movie girlfriend.
Why you should not vote for her: She never set foot on the court.
You would think that Robert DeNiro as a deranged fan in a thriller would work, yet in “The Fan”, the man considered as one of the greatest American actors of all time was not given what was needed to be effective. Was he believable? Sure, but watching Gil Renard fall into insanity wasn’t as much fun, because we really didn’t care for Wesley Snipes’ (who played the Baseball player he was obsessed with) character. As such, it came off a little cliché ridden, and we kind of wished he was obsessed with someone else. Now, Barry Bonds a few years later? That would have been interesting; and most people would know who to cheer for…and no Barry, we aren’t looking at you.
The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Fan (1996)
Actor: Robert DeNiro
Role Portrayed: Obsessed fan of the San Francisco Giants
Why you should vote for him: This is the Godfather and that means….
Why you should not vote for him: ….ok….it doesn’t really mean anything.
