If you look predominantly at Wins and Losses than you have to wonder why someone with a record of 94 and 125 is so high on this list, but we are a lot smarter than we used to be in regards to those two stats then we used to be and even back in the 1890’s baseball fans knew that Theodore Breitenstein was a very good Pitcher.

The southpaw was an innings eater who was not the beneficiary of a lot of run support or a team that won a lot.  In 1893 with a losing record of 19 and 24 he still won the ERA Title and in 1894 when the pitcher’s mound was pushed back 10 feet and offensive numbers rose, Breitenstein was still one of the better Pitchers and would win 27 Games, finish fourth in ERA and was the league leader in Innings Pitched.  In 1895, he actually led the NL in Losses with 30 but still was fifth in bWAR for Pitchers.

Despite his losses, Breitenstein was still coveted and the Cincinnati Reds would purchase his contract after the 1896 Season.
