We Have Announced our 2016 Finalists for our Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Last week the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their Finalists for the Class of 2016.

As such our Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is doing the same thing.

The Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was designed to celebrate the bands that not exactly real.  While some have gone on actual tour, the origin behind the musician is fictional.

Last year in the first full class inducted, The Blues Brothers, Spinal Tap and The Monkees were chosen as the result of a year long online poll.  We have now reached the final fifteen finalists for the Class of 2016.

The 15 Finalists are:

1.  Alvin & The Chipmunks

Say what you want about these anthropomorphic rodents, but they have had multiple hit movies and went number one on Billboard twice.  The Chipmunks were Finalists last year.

2.  The Archies

The Archies had a surprise number one hit with “Sugar Sugar”, which has to be considered a classic in the bubblegum genre.

3.  The Be-Sharps

Comprised of Homer Simpson, Principal Skinner, Barney Gumble and Apu Nahasspeemapetilion, the Be-Sharps won a Grammy Award for the Outstanding Soul, Spoken Word, or Barbershop Album of the Year.

4. Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem

The house band for the Muppets narrowly missed out on an induction last year as they finished fourth in 2015 Finalist voting.

5. Gorillaz

A very successful virtual band, Gorillaz is the creation of Blur frontman, Damon Albarn.  Arguably, Gorillaz “blurs” the line between real and fictional more than any other Semi-Finalist.

6. Hannah Montana

Hannah Montana was one of the most successful Disney shows of all time and launched Miley Cyrus to the stratosphere.

7. Jerome “Chef” McElroy

Played by the late Isaac Hayes, “Chef” taught the children of South Park right from wrong.

8. Marvin Berry & The Starlighters

Marvin Berry, “the cousin of Chuck Berry” performed with his band, the Starlighters at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance in Back to the Future.

9. Michigan J. Frog

The mascot for Warner Brothers is arguably the least contemporary Semi-Finalist as the frog appears to only know Broadway songs from before 1950.

10. Phoebe Buffay

Phoebe Buffay may have never made it out of Central Perk but “Smelly Cat” lives on in Pop Culture.

11. Sex Bob-omb

Sex Bob-omb was the band helmed by Scott Pilgrim, who had the most literal battle of the bands in cinematic history.

12. The School of Rock

From the film of the same name, this is one of two entries featuring Jack Black.

13. Tenacious D

Tenacious D, the side project of Jack Black and Kyle Gass has released multiple albums and had a fictionalized movie on their backstory, “The Pick of Destiny”.

14. The Wonders

From “That Thing You Do”, The Wonders had one hit (this making them one hit wonders) in the early 1960’s.

15. Wyld Stallyns

If Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is to believed, Wyld Stallyns are the band that brought peace to the world.

In December, the second full class will be announced, as the top two vote getters will enter the Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the fourth and fifth inductee.

Voting can be found here: http://www.notinhalloffame.com/ficitious-rock-and-roll-voting/2016-final-round.

Bill Goldberg to the WWE HOF?

There has been a lot of speculation that the return of Bill Goldberg will culminate in him headlining the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

As WWE fans know, Goldberg returned to the WWE after a twelve year absence and will be facing the last man he wrestled, Brock Lesnar.

Fans may remember that their contest at Wrestlemania XX was far from a classic.  Goldberg’s contract was set to expire and he had made it clear that he would not be resigning.  It had also leaked that Lesnar would be leaving to try a career in the NFL and you had a match between two people who were on their way out and leaving the WWE on acrimonious terms.  The two were booed out of the building and the highlight of the match was special referee, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin stunning them both.

However that was 12 years ago.

Goldberg remains in great physical shape and Lesnar would become a UFC Heavyweight Champion and you now have a match that fans are looking forward to, which will take place at the Survivor Series in Toronto.

The former WWE and WCW Champion was brought back in slowly as a downloadable character for WWE2K17, the video game.  In the past, this has brought the Ultimate Warrior to the fold and brought Sting in to the “E” for the first time.  Both of whom would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame shortly after.  There is a lot of reason to think that this could happen with Bill Goldberg.

Currently ranked #29 on our Notinhalloffame.com WWE ranking, he would be a bona fide headliner for the next WWE Class.  While this is not official, we are expecting this to happen.

A Look at James Ellsworth’s Underdog Comic Book Story in the WWE

The World Wrestling Entertainment has rolled the dice outside the industry many times in the past. Some, like the XFL, flopped miserably but made significant innovations still used today in most American football coverage.

Others, such as the WWE Comics, which will soon hit the stands in November, according to IGN, are promising – not to mention fitting for their brand. In hindsight, the former seem like a bad idea, hence the failed result, considering that one is a sports entertainment brand and the other is a legitimate and established professional game. On the other hand, the professional wrestling company’s journey into the world of comic books looks like a match made in fictional heaven.

Nowadays, various media entities resort to comic books – so much so that it somewhat looks like the easiest, safest way out. On the flipside, the viewing public constantly craves such stories to be brought to life on screen. Aside from the success in these popular visual mediums, Pocketfruity discussed how these fictional characters transcended to different gaming platforms – both console and online. In short, comic books, based on the website, “have had a huge resurgence in the larger culture… sparking a near-endless demand for these stories.” The WWE, however, did the exact opposite, as they flipped the tables and immortalized their superstars into the colorful pages of these books.

In this Vince McMahon era of professional wrestling, it seems like the two foremost requirements of landing a job with the company is a well-defined – borderline hulking – physique and a larger-than-life attitude on the microphone. These facets not just make a good wrestler on screen, but a likely comic book character altogether. However, in this so-called New Era of Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks, Kevin Owens and AJ Styles, there’s one superstar that sticks out like a sore thumb, a man, who on paper neither looks like a wrestler nor a comic book superhero.

James Ellsworth entered the bright lights of the WWE on the July 25th edition of RAW in an enhancement match versus Braun Strowman. As expected, Strowman demolished the – in pro wrestling parlance – jobber in a quick albeit brutal fashion. More than a month later, the lanky indie wrestler from Maryland, who is also the head promoter of local indie show Adrenaline Championship Wrestling, made his SmackDown LIVE debut against no less than the champ AJ Styles.

Fans, or the WWE Universe, saw this hilarious sketch as somewhat another squash match starring James Ellsworth, a David-vs-Goliath type of booking featuring a chinless indie darling and a literal world-beater in AJ Styles.

However, as the stipulation would have it, Styles’ current rival Dean Ambrose was designated as the special guest referee. With plenty of help from the former champ Ambrose, Ellsworth pulled off the impossible and pinned the champ. The following week, SmackDown LIVE GM Daniel Bryan put him in another match opposite Styles, this time with the WWE World Championship belt on the line.

People raved about it on social media; the event was the perfect storm so to speak. James Ellsworth has a memorable catchphrase about any man with two hands has a fighting chance, he has undeniable in-ring presence, and most of all, the WWE Universe loves him. Ellsworth even has authentic merchandise on WWE Shop. The title match went on as planned. AJ beat him to a pulp – with only a “No Chin Music” (a play on Shawn Michaels’ patented “Sweet Chin Music”) as his defining moment. In the end, James Ellsworth pulled off another stunning upset, this time via a DQ, as AJ Styles deliberately failed to stop punching after the obligatory five-count.

Though, AJ Styles still retained his belt, James Ellsworth gained something greater than a precious title. He’s now an unlikely new WWE Superstar, who on just his third official live show with the company, main evented against a recognized champion. Yes, he doesn’t have the looks nor the abilities of a future WWE Hall of Fame wrestler, but he – to borrow the great Chris Jericho’s words – has the definite “IT” factor. James Ellsworth is light years away from having the most physically intimidating body in the business, but his story, his underdog journey to the big league has the makings of a theoretically exciting WWE Comic.

The 2016 RRHOF Nominees are Announced!

It’s that time again!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled their 2019 Nominees, which has been bumped up to 19 from the traditional 15 that they usually put forth.

As per years previous, we see some familiar nominations, some new faces and a very diverse group of musicians.

The nominees are as follows:

Pearl JamRanked #1 on Notinhalloffame.com.   No shock here, as everyone projected that this very influential band would be nominated on their first year of eligibility.  This might be as close to a lock as it gets in terms of induction.

Kraftwerk:  Ranked #2 on Notinhalloffame.com.  The Germans are back with their fourth nomination.  While this is a band not well known to the casual music fan, they have all heard them sampled in one form or another.

MC5:  Ranked #6 on Notinhalloffame.com.  Kick Out the Jams!   The proto-punk rock band is back on the ballot after a long absence.  This is their second nomination after twenty-six years of eligibility.

Yes:  Ranked #13 on Notinhalloffame.com.  They are on the ballot for the third time and are the sentimental favorites for many Progressive Rock fans.  They should have been inducted years ago.

Tupac ShakurRanked #15 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This year’s hip hop nominee became a first year nominee.  Expect this to be a first year induction.  Now will he accept the honor in hologram form?

Janet JacksonRanked #22 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is her second straight nomination, and she is without question the strongest female candidate of the lot.  This should be her year and thus necessitate a logo change from us!

Depeche Mode:  Ranked #26 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is a big month for them.  They have a new album coming out and they have been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time.  They have been Hall of Fame eligible for eleven years.

The CarsRanked #33 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is their second nomination in a row.

Journey:  Ranked #56 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is their first nomination after seventeen years of eligibility.  The Arena Rock band still has a huge following and also has a large online campaign to get them in.

Jane’s AddictionRanked #60 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is their first nomination after being eligible for five years.  The connection to early 90’s alternative and Lollapooza makes them a strong candidate.

Steppenwolf:  Ranked #69 on Notinhalloffame.com.  The band who coined the term heavy metal is nominated for the first time in twenty-four years.

The Electric Light OrchestraRanked #80 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is the first nomination for Jeff Lynne and his band and could make him the final “Wilbury” to be enshrined.

The Zombies:  Ranked #88 on Notinhalloffame.com.  The Zombies return to the ballot for their second time and have been RRHOF eligible for twenty-eight years.

Chic:  Ranked #110 on Notinhalloffame.com.  Here we go again.  Fifteen Years of eligibility, eleven years nominated.  Next year it will be sixteen and twelve

Joe TexRanked #112 on Notinhalloffame.com.  This is the 5th nomination for Joe Tex and first since 2011.

Chaka Khan:  Ranked #130 on Notinhalloffame.com.  She was nominated last year, though we would have liked to see her nominated with Rufus.

Joan Baez:  Ranked #178 on Notinhalloffame.com.  Is this the biggest surprise of the lot?  Could be.  The folk singer secured her first nomination after being eligible for thirty-two years.

Bad BrainsRanked #248 on Notinhalloffame.com.   A shocker, but in a good way.  This is a very influential group from Washington D.C. though we don’t expect them to pull another surprise out of their hat and get enshrined this year.  This is their first nomination after ten years of eligibility.

Did they get it right?

For us, the biggest surprise is that Nine Inch Nails were not nominated after being put forth on the ballot the last two years, but overall we like this group.

What are your thoughts?
