Daniel LaRusso

First off, let’s get something out of the way. For our purposes; the Karate Kid Remake starring Will Smith’s snotty kid never happened. With that out of the way, one of the great underdogs in sports cinema history has to be Daniel LaRusso. In the first film, LaRusso got the crap beaten out of him constantly by a group of karate fighting California teens with a merciless trainer. With the most unlikely help (the iconic Mr. Miyagi), LaRusso managed to learn the art of self defence…while learning how to paint a house. He had the chance to face his bullies…

Dottie Hinson

Geena Davis’ Dottie Hinson (a composite of actual star players from the All American Girls Professional Baseball League) was the focal point of the excellent ensemble film about the aforementioned league that started in World War II. Davis may have been a last minute substitution for Debra Winger, but she looked every bit the best player and on field leader of the Rockford Peaches, the team she was the Catcher for. If any player on this version of the Peaches makes the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame, Dottie Hinson is probably the one that should go in. The Bullet Points:…

Huxley College (The Marx Brothers)

As you have seen with the Athlete and Contributor section, we very rarely separate candidates, but even though the roles on the field were so different, how can we possibly separate the legendary Marx Brothers? You can’t and here we have Horse Feathers, where Groucho plays the President of fictional Huxley College and he begins recruiting for the football program (two of them being Harpo and Chico). Through turns of events that can only happen with the Marx Brothers, all four of them wind up on the gridiron where they score the winning touchdown on the back of a horse…

Morris Buttermaker

Perhaps the only manager perfect for untalented foul mouthed kids is a drunken former minor league pitcher turned pool cleaner. Morris Buttermaker was not the role model you wanted your kids to learn baseball (or anything else) from, but watching him with other people’s kids was a guilty delight. If any “contributor” from the Bad News Bears trilogy gets in, this should be the one. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Bad News Bears (1976) Actor: Walter Mattheau Role Portrayed: Manager of the Bad News Bears Why you should vote for him: We would vote for him just for that…

Paul "Wrecking" Crewe

We will go on record and say that of all the many sports roles that Burt Reynolds had, that the one as Paul “Wrecking” Crewe, the incarcerated Quarterback was easily our favorite. Actually, we will do one better, and say that it is our favorite Reynolds role period. Crewe was cocky, belligerent, tough and cool, and we watched him struggle with a moral compass, without falling too deeply into Hollywood cliché’s. For a Fictitious Athlete Hall, The Longest Yard (both versions actually) was a film that had brilliant football scenes and built up the end game perfectly. We would be…
