Journey

How can a band that has not had a new hit in nearly twenty years and reviled by so many still be one of the most downloaded artists today? Despite the criticism that Journey did receive, of the “Arena Rock” bands, it can be argued that only the Steve Perry group has the ability to re-release a song and have it sound like it was produced recently.

After a few failed albums, Journey hired the vocally talented Steve Perry to be their lead singer and altered their sound to produce radio friendly hits. The move proved fruitful immediately as Journey would go on to sell millions of records with each album generating a hit. They would sell out arenas full of fans eager to listen to their power ballads. While the style of music they championed may be detested by some, it has spawned many an imitator and maybe this is why they have a more timeless quality than any other of their generation. Induction however would have to come from the many critics who have always despised them.

Although they've been one of my favorite bands since childhood, I'd have put them at 50/50 in terms of deserving an induction... until "Don't Stop Believin'" somehow became a retro behemoth hit single in the mid 00's. That occurrence puts the icing on the cake to the argument: how many bands can claim to have had such a resurgency of a hit single in the US? The millions of records they sold and formidable influence on other bands should be factors as well.

Journey's been making music/tourin g for 40 years, sold 80 million records worldwide, had the top selling single in iTunes history and still not nominated. What a joke. Like them or not, Journey made an impact on rock/pop and world class musicians have passed through or are still members. They practically invented the power ballad. Sure they softened as time went on but their talent still stands.

The only "hall" Journey belong in are the exit hall out of the building.

Steve Perry STILL sounds like a duck.

And Neal Schon STILL doesn't know how to read.

As much as I have always enjoyed Journey' s music I think at some point - well - you can't put everyone in can you? If you do then what's the point of having a Hall of Fame at all? Some bands and artists that we like and see value in are not necessarily "Hall of Famer's& quot; right? Right! That being said! Go on - Put 'em in!!

For me, making a judgement call on Journey getting inducted is a tough one. Yes, they got hit songs that are still played on the radio to this day (with "Don 9;t Stop Believing&qu ot; taking on a life of it's own), and they also have a devoted fanbase and strong album sales. (And I also appreciate their connection to both of the "Tron&q uot; movies that I love so much, geek that I am.) But you also have to look at the bigger picture for this particular band. America seems to be the *only* country on the globe that has ever really warmed up to Journey. To my knowledge, they have never been a big group overseas (certainly not in Britain, not even when "Escape " came out). And yes, it's true: the critics do not like them at all, consistently writing off Journey as musical fluff. So, regarding Journey getting a Hall Of Fame induction... .it's a tough call.

I believe the single worst omission of those eligible for the hall. The argument has always been they are too soft to be inducted. come on. With ABBA going in last year that argument is mute. Journey has sold more albums then any group eligible for induction that is not in. and by quite a large margin. Their popularity and legacy (my gosh can u turn around wout hearing Don't stop Believing?) have reamined solid. As for the impact question. Why is it only the bands that influence a Nirvana or the Police considered influential? Journey has obviously influenced everyone since their huge run of success in the 70's and 80's! That's enough for me and should be enough for the Hall.
