The Artists

Nonnie Parry

We can’t obviously speak for everyone, but for our money the ultimate guilty pleasure film is the 1972 film, the Poseidon Adventure. The acting was bad, the names were huge, but none of that mattered! One of the featured characters trying to survive was from the band, on the form of Nonnie Parry who may have had an inappropriate relationship with Red Skeleton (or so we thought), but she did survive; though never to play horrible music with her dead brother. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Poseidon Adventure (1972) Actor: Carol Lynley Songs you might remember: The Morning After…

Olivia and Stewie

From Family Guy, we have Stewie Griffin’s attempt at musical genius when he paired up with Olivia Fuller and became a part of a two year old accumulative pair named “Olivia and Stewie” and sang for retirement homes, before they split up and Olivia became a star on her own. Do a few showtunes make a Fictitious Rock and Roll HOF candidate? It shouldn’t, but anything Stewie Griffin can’t be ignored. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Family Guy (2002) Actors: Seth McFarlane (Stewie) Rachel McFarlane (Olivia) Songs you might remember: None Why you should vote for them: Family Guy…

Omar Obeidi

From the attempted parody of American Idol (Called American Dreamz) we have a jihadist whose singing ability gives him the ability to compete on the American Dreamz competition. His love of showmanship apparently is greater than his desire for seventy-two virgins as he does not go through the plan to kill the President of the United States who is at the finale and we learn at the end that he made it to Broadway. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: American Dreamz (2006) Actor: Sam Golzari Songs you might remember: Impossible Dream Why you should vote for him: Are we the…

Open 24 Hours

In the quintessential (though one and done) early 1980’s Sitcom, Square Pegs, we had New Wave aficionado and budding superstar in the genre, Johnny Slash, who put together his own band, Open 24 Hours. Of note, they played Muffy Tepperman’s (Jami Gertz) Bat Mitzvah (where Devo opened for them) and had John Densmore of the Doors as their drummer. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Square Pegs (1982-83) Actors: Merritt Butrick (Johnny Slash) John Densmore Songs you might remember: I’m Tired Why you should vote for them: Music was a big part of this show, and an actual Door? Come…

Operaman

Adam Sandler was one of the most successful comedians to ever emerge from Saturday Night Live and one of his most basic, yet memorable characters had Sandler perform as “Operaman”, which was just Sandler singing in an operatic voice in a wig and cape, and singing his jokes. It wasn’t exactly genius, but like most of his SNL characters it worked. Still, does an Opera character (especially one with no signature songs) belong in this Hall? The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Saturday Night Live (1991-95) Actor: Adam Sandler Songs you might remember: None Why you should vote for him:…

Orvis Goodnight

Down and Out in Beverly Hills got good reviews and made money at the box office, but for our purposes this is the movie that reintroduced the world to Little Richard, the man who many (well at least Little Richard thinks so) is the true King of Rock and Roll. Richard had been in movies before, but never was he cast as perfectly as he was here, where he got to play a former 50’s Rock Star who was now a successful music producer. Those who remember this movie might cast a vote for Orvis Goodnight. The Bullet Points: Movie…

Otis "Bad" Blake

As down and out as you could possibly get, Otis “Bad” Blake (Jeff Bridges) was a fallen Country Music star whose star had long since faded. A severe alcoholic, Blake was still a talent, and in “Crazy Heart” we see his rocky path to redemption. The acclaimed film saw Jeff Bridges win the Best Actor Oscar and considering the talents who collaborated on the music for the film (T-Bone Burnett for example) this could be a strong underdog for the Hall. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Crazy Heart (2009) Actor: Jeff Bridges Songs you might remember: Hold on You Why…

Otis Lee Crenshaw

Rich Hall may not have achieved that much fame for his work on Saturday Night Live and Fridays, but he has gained a bit of success for his Country Music alter ego, Otis Lee Crenshaw. Crenshaw is Tennessee born, married seven times and has been incarcerated a dozen times. His signature song is the prison rape song, “He Almost Looks Like You” which might be enough for anyone to consider voting for him. Otis Lee Crenshaw actually has a CD out and did a tour with his backing band, The Black Liars.   The Bullet Points: Album Appeared: London Not Tennessee…

Phish Tahko

“My Name is Earl” was a moderate hit television series, but we always thought it was somewhat underappreciated. In an effort to cross #50 off his list of bad deeds where Earl slept with his friend’s mom, we learn that the Hickey brothers were in a band named Phish Tahko, though we can’t say we ever learned much about the band. Still with this band name, and with Earl Hickey, we couldn’t resist creating an entry for them.    The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: My Name is Earl (2006) Actors: Jason Lee (Earl Hickey, Guitar) Ethan Suplee (Randy Hickey,…

Phoebe Buffay

In the 1990’s, Friends was a pop culture phenomenon, and people would watch the show and ask each other which “Friend” they were. The quirkiest character was Phoebe Buffay, especially in the early seasons where she performed at “Central Perk”. Her signature song (and perhaps the song of 1995) was “Smelly Cat” which if you did not come of age in that era, you may not understand how many twenty-somethings knew that song. Friends was the biggest show of that decade, so this may not be an impossible induction.  People of a certain age; know what we are talking about.…

Pink

Before he became known for his charitable work with Live Aid, Bob Geldof was the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, though Pink Floyd fans remember him best as “Pink”, the self abusing delusional rocker in their film, The Wall. Although the film remains iconic, and the album it is based on is considered a masterpiece, we did not see that much of “Pink’s” ability as a rock star, and as such this could be a candidate that might be overlooked. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982) Actor: Bob Geldof Songs you might remember: In…

Pootie Tang

Written and directed by Louis C.K., Pootie Tang was part farce, part blaxploitation commentary and part comedic genius. It was not well received, but it did gain an audience, and the lead character was shown to be a singer/rapper of sorts within the film. We are not sure whether this is a serious contender for the Hall or not, but again this is one where we glad we don’t have to decide. The Bullet Points: TV Show and Movie Appeared: The Chris Rock Show (1997-2000) Pootie Tang (2001) Actor: Lance Crouther Songs you might remember: None Why you should vote…

Pop

Loosely based on Wham, Pop was a very successful band in the 1980’s and when the duo broke up, one of them had a very successful solo career which saw him knighted and the other was asked to perform in “Battle of the 80’s Has-Beens” Hugh Grant was great as the Andrew Ridgley character, Alex Fletcher who has seen better days in his career, but has a chance to redeem himself with by writing a song for Cora (a Britney Spears clone) which would allow him to sing at her concert. It would turn out good for Fletcher, as we…

Professor LePlano and the Planotones

From the tribute film to the spirit of Rock and Roll, American Hot Wax, we have “Professor LePlano and the Planotones” who were the resident DooWop Group of the film. The film’s rock stars were half people who played themselves and half made up bands, which may make these fictional entries from the film muddled at best, and long shots for entry. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: American Hot Wax (1978) Actors: Kenny Vance Joe Esposito Bruce Sudano Ed Hokenson Songs you might remember: Rock and Roll is Here to Stay Why you should vote for them: This is from…

Prozzak

Jay Levine and James Bryan were members of the Canadian band, The Philosopher Kings and looked to create something a little bit different. With that, they created virtual faux British personas and created Simon and Milo, two men always searching for love. As Prozzak, they released four albums, the first of which was a hit in Canada. As always, just making it in Canada, probably isn’t enough to make it for this Hall of Fame.           The Bullet Points: Albums Appeared: Hot Show (1998) Saturday People (2000) Ready Ready Set Go (2002) Cruel Cruel World (2005) Performers: Jay Levine James…

Punk Floyd

Formed after the end of the Rutles, Dirk McQuickley (Eric Idle) formed the Punk Rock band, Punk Floyd. His wife Martini, who didn’t sing, joined him; not there was a lot of time for her do so if she was so inclined. The punk genre landed to much shorter songs, though his first single from the three-minute debut album (White Dopes on Punk) lasted as long as it took to say the title. Like the Rutles, Punk Floyd had an extensive fictional discography and for something that appeared so briefly in the Rutles documentary, the backstory was so extensive. That…

Quad City Ramblers

From the underappreciated concept album (The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands) by the Turtles we have an albums where different “bands” appeared. This allowed the group to not only stretch their skills musically, as each “band” had a completely different sound and also showcase their humor. In the fourth track of the album, the Turtles go Country to what we thought was a solid result in “Too Much Heartsick Feeling”. Actually, when reading the liner notes and listening to the song, we could envision them in a retro (though modern) version of Hee Haw as the musical act.…

Queens of Dogtown

You had to know that any child of Hank Moody would have a lot of artistic ability right? Becca Moody (Madeline Martin) was recruited to join an all-girl Rock band led by Pearl (Zoe Kravitz) and this band was surprisingly good, which actually led to a few people wondering if the band was in fact real. They aren’t, but for a brief moment in time, we forgot about Hank’s sexual exploits. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Californication (2011) Actors: Zoe Kravitz (Pearl, Lead Singer) Madeline Martin (Becca Moody, Guitar) Songs you might remember: Would? Why you should vote for…

Rachel Marron

The critics destroyed the Bodyguard, but the film going public flocked to it in droves. The movie propelled Whitney Houston to the biggest she would ever be and her first starring role as diva, Rachel Marron showed the world that she could act, and her singing pipes were at full steam with her version of “I Will Always Love You” rocketing to the top of the charts as well as the album taking over as the highest selling soundtrack of all time. Those kind of sales could translate into a Hall of Fame spot, couldn’t it? We will let you…

Ralph Jones

Through the magic of cinema, a lowly American Las Vegas lounge singer Ralph Jones (John Goodman) takes over as the King of England. The film was predictable, but Goodman was likable and brought a little bit of a Rock and Roll attitude with a solid rendition of Good Golly Miss Molly. Still, when people think of this film, they are not likely to remember the music; that works against his induction case. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: King Ralph (1991) Actor: John Goodman Songs you might remember: Good Golly Miss Molly Why you should vote for him: John Goodman is…

Randy Watson

Randy Watson (and Sexual Chocolate) was a horrible act played by Eddie Murphy in Coming to America, though his appearance in “That’s My Mama” and cover of “The Greatest Love of All” made it impossible for us to not to love (at least sarcastically) his performance at the community show in Queens, NY. At least he tried! The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Coming to America (1988) Actor: Eddie Murphy Songs you might remember: The Greatest Love of All Why you should vote for him: This was Eddie Murphy at his best. Why you should not vote for him: Randy Watson…

Ray High

In Pete Townshend’s Concept Album/Concert Film, Pyschoderelict, we learn of the story of Ray High, a 60’s rock star whose life has fallen apart from drug and alcohol abuse. He is lured back to recording music through a bizarre scam and the though the material is unique, the music was far from his best work. The Bullet Points: Album Appeared: Psychoderelict (1993) Performer: Pete Townshend Songs you might remember: English Boy Why you should vote for him: This is a Rock and Roll legend after all. Why you should not vote for him: This was poorly received and barely remembered.…

Rayna Jaymes

It does not matter how famous you are. Eventually, somebody younger and more attractive is going to take your place. This is where we first meet Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) who is the “Queen of Country” who is falling from her perch. It is a great role, where Jaymes’ singing is only a backdrop, as her personal life is far more interesting, with issues with her father, husband and everything else you can imagine. Britton does a great job here, and could be a dark horse for our Hall of Fame; should you consider her Rock enough! The Bullet Points:…
