Harold Lamb

We are going way back for this one. In the 1925 silent movie, The Freshman, we have a “Rudyesque” story where nebbish Harold Lamb joins the College Football team in hope of landing the girl. We guess that College Football was not that competitive back then as not only did he make the team (initially as a tackling dummy) but would lead them to a victory. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Freshman (1925) Actor: Harold Lloyd Role Portrayed: College Football Player for Tate University Why You Should Vote For Him: He won the game and got the girl. Doesn’t…

Jake Taylor

Jake Taylor may not have been the one given the best lines in Major League, but he was the heart and soul of the team and the movie (and writing that did not feel like a cliché). It was Taylor who melded the team together off the field and on the field on his gimpy knees ran out the surprise bunt (after the brilliant called shot to field) and suggested the play that Willie “Mays” Hayes score from second. Taylor also got to bed an in her prime Rene Russo which was likely of a higher quality than he was…

Jimmy Chitwood

Honestly, in our opinion this is not as much of a lock as people would think. It is undeniable that without Jimmy Chitwood, Hickory High does not win the Indiana State Championship, or even makes a dent in that tournament. We will also say that without Chitwood stating that if Coach Norman Dale was fired, he would not rejoin the basketball team. However, that moment was one of the most passionless speeches uttered in a pivotal sports cinema moment. Even on the hardwood, we remember less of the montage of Chitwood jump shots as opposed to the diminutive Ollie making…

Norman Dale

There are times when we want to institute a “Gene Hackman Rule” which basically means if you see his name in the opening credits, you know the movie won’t stink (or at least he will give it a redeeming quality).   This isn’t to say that Hoosiers would not have worked with someone else cast as Coach Norman Dale, but don’t you buy Hackman as a sage sports authority figure before he even utters a word? Norman Dale was a lot more than just a coach. He was a student himself, learning from past mistakes (he was fired from Ithaca after…

Paulie Pennino

We enjoyed watching Paulie Pennino in the Rocky Films, but we are happy that he is not our friend. Actually, you have to wonder why Rocky Balboa was ever friends with the guy in the first place, as he was always spouting off negative comments, drank too much, treated his sister like crap, tried to break Rocky’s arms, and signed over power of attorney which bankrupted Balboa. Even appearing as a corner man for Rocky, he was five shades of useless; only offering up the advice to “hit the one in the middle” in Rocky IV as a moment of…

Sam Malone

The former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Sam “Mayday” Malone was your typical womanizing (though not always the swiftest) ex-jock. Malone was one of the top leading sitcom men in the 80’s and early 90’s and his show, Cheers, was one of the highest rated shows of its day. We saw a lot of Sam’s athletic past, as the company ringer for the softball team, striking out playmates in a charity game, a commercial with Luis Tiant and an unfulfilled comeback. As much was made of Malone’s baseball career, we love that fact and could champion him for…
