Gossage wants Clemens out of the HOF

On ESPN radio today, Baseball Hall of Famer Goose Gossage stated that Roger Clemens should NOT be going to the Hall of Fame. The former reliever adamantly stated that Clemens and other PED users should not be rewarded for “cheating” and stated firmly “there is no place for them in the Hall of Fame”.

This is not the first time that a current Hall of Fame player has gone on record that those caught taking Performance Enhancing Drugs should be banned from Cooperstown, yet it still carries weight every time you hear it. It was one thing when fans and media state it, but when your fellow athletes from the previous generation do, it causes headlines.

For us here at notinhalloffame, this is actually our most eagerly awaited Hall of Fame ballot.

Lanny Poffo claims his brother would only go into the HOF if his whole family went in with him.

An interesting video has surfaced on YouTube that has significance to the WWE Hall of Fame.   As you may have heard “Leaping” Lanny Poffo (the brother of our number one selection, Randy “Macho Man” Savage) has stated that Savage had turned down the Hall unless his entire family (Lanny and their father, Angelo) were inducted too. Poffo has again taken to YouTube, this time with his mother to corroborate that statement.

As we don’t really have any reason to doubt Lanny, we raise this question: Should it happen?   It can be easily argued that if this is the only way to get Savage in, then so be it, but the obvious counter is that Lanny (who did have a long career in the WWE) was not HOF material, nor was his father who was at best a journeyman wrestler and whose promotion in Kentucky was not exactly successful.

In the video, Poffo states that Savage wanted to do this (inducted as a family) when the Von Erichs were inducted as a unit a few years ago. When that family was inducted, it included the patriarch and promoter of World Class and (very successful wrestler in his day) Fritz Von Erich and his six sons. This included Chris Von Erich, who only had a handful of matches and committed suicide over the fact that his career was not successful. Poffo especially made reference to Chris being in the Hall and how he and his father were more worthy than the youngest member of the Von Erich clan.

Surely the gesture to put Chris (and Mike for that matter) in with the Von Erich Family to the HOF was done out of respect to the family as a whole, but again with all due to respect to the Poffos, it cannot be argued that the Von Erichs controlled a major territory in wrestling and generated far more impact than the Poffos did as a family. Allegedly, Randy crowbarred his father into the WCW Hall of Fame which was not exactly received warmly by other wrestlers, so it is not hard to believe that a similar request was made of the WWE.

One thing we do know….Randy Savage should be in the WWE Hall of Fame. We just don’t know if we will ever see it.

Roger Clemens Acquitted

...and you should not be surprised.  From the beginning of the trial, Roger Clemens legal team methodically picked apart the evidence against the multi time Cy Young Award winner and those closely following the trial knew where the decision was likely to go.

With all of this said, Clemens remains guilty of PED use in the court of public opinion and an informal poll on the street would likely paint Clemens as a PED user.  His acquittal won't change this.  Along with Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, Clemens enters the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time under a cloud of controversy.  We rank him at number 2 on our list (behind Bonds) and if we had a vote would cast a yes in his direction.  We do understand why some pwople wouldn't.

LaDainian Tomlinson Retires

LaDainian Tomlinson will be rejoining the San Diego Chargers with the exclusive reasoning of retiring as a member of the team he achieved his greatest success in.  He will be retiring with what we consider Hall of Fame credentials and a potential first ballot entry.

With an MVP award (2006), five Pro Bowls, 13,684 career Rushong Yards, and 162 total Touchdowns, the former Purdue Boilermaker is retiring in the top five of many key career offensive categories.  Considered one of the good guys on oand off the field, we can't imagine that he won't be ranked in our top three when he is eligible for the Hall of Fame in five years.  Ww know that once he becomes he ranked by us, he won't stay on the list long.

Tito Ortiz named to the UFC HOF

Dana White and Tito Ortiz are far from the best of friends, but this has not stopped the latter from being named as the eight inductee to the UFC Hall of Fame.   Ortiz is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and is the current record holder for the most fights under the UFC banner.  It is expected that he will be inducted on July 6th, the day before he has his final fight at UFC 148 against longtime rival Forrest Griffin.

With this news, we wonder if it is time to start ranking UFC as a Notinhalloffame category.  Any thoughts on this?

Thomas Hearns headlines the new Boxing HOF Class

We here at notinhalloffame.com would like to officially congratulate the newest class of inductees to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.   This year's class is headlined by Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns who held championships in various weight classes and whose clash with Marvin Hagler is still considered legendary.   Hearns is joined by Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson who was a star in the Flyweight division and was the first African American to win a major championship in that weight class.  Broadcaster Al Bernstein was also named as was trainer, Freddie Roach and writer, Michael Katz.

Perhaps the widest known in this year's class is ring announcer Michael Buffer whose signature pre game vocals of "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" may be more widely known than any of the others inducted.

Again, we congratulate them all!

Sting Announced as the first inductee to the TNA HOF

Although we don't have any current plans to create a TNA "Notinhalloffame" section, we would like to congratulate Sting as being the first inductee to the TNA Hall of Fame.  As we have mentioned before, we do no know how this will progress, but with the possible exception of Jeff Jarrett, Sting is a good choice to kick off their Hall.

RIP: Bob Welch

The World of Rock and Roll has anothe casualty as former Fleetwood Mac guitarist and 70's Solo star, Bob Welch passed away today at the age of 66 to a self inflicted gun shot to the chest.  Welch was with Fleetwood Mac in the "transition years" of 1971 to 1974 and was not part of the bands mainstream explosion in 1975.  Welch did however have success on his own with the release of "French Kiss" which yielded the hits "Ebony Eyes and "Sentimental Lady".

Welch was snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as he was not part of the Fleetwood Mac lineup that was inducted.  This was the case even though there were recognized members of the band prior to Welch's arrival (who were not part of the mid-70's success) who were inducted.  At the time of the induction, Welch was estranged from Mick Fleetwood, who likely would have had the clout to have seen him enshrined with the rest of the group.

RIP: Bob.... You will be missed.

Magglio Ordonez Retires

We have another major retirement in the world of sports and it comes to us again from Detroit.  Although Magglio Ordonez will not be a sure Hall of Famer like Nicklas Lidstrom was (who retired from the Red Wings earlier in the week), he will appear on the ballot and does have a career to be proud of.

The native Venezuelan retires with 2,156 Hits, 294 Home Runs and a career .309 Batting Average.  With Six All Star Appearances, Ordonez was a solid contributor in the middle of both White Sox and Tiger lineups for years.  He is unlikely to get past the first ballot, but he does a career worth celebrating.

TNA Announces Their Own HOF

The owner of TNA Wrestling, Dixie Carter, has announced that they will be beginning their own Hall of Fame.  As the WWE Hall of Fame is a fairly significant part of our website, we are frankly a little curious as to how we should react.

The first inductee will be announced on June 10th, on their next Pay Per View titled "Slammivarsary" to be held in Arlington, Texas.  The WWE Hall of Fame has proven to be a moneymaker for the organization, and many wrestlers consider it to be an honor to be placed in that institution.  In fact, Ric Flair, who was then under contract to TNA was allowed to appear on WWE Television to accept his second (and unprecedented) second induction as part of the Four Horsemen.  TNA has even used existing WWE Hall of Fame rings as part of their storyline.

Of course this raises many questions.  First off, will this be only a celebration of TNA Wrestling or wrestling in general?  At ten years old, Dixie Carter's promotion does have a solid tenure, but is it one worth a Hall of Fame?  Frankly, and we are sure Carter knows this herself, that there really isn't a Hall of Fame like career within the confines of the TNA canon.

Will they have a physical Hall of Fame?  This could be a major step towards legitimacy as the WWE Hall does not actually have a physical space to call their own.  A true facility would give this Hall a credibility that their larger competitor does not have.

And of course the biggest question.... who would go into it?  Perhaps founder Jeff Jarrett?  How about Sting, of whom Dixie could beat Vince to the punch.  The same could be said about Kevin Nash.  Will they look at Hogan?  To us, the most obvious choice is Jeff Jarrett, who did found the promotion and wrestle in multiple main events for the company.

Now here is our question.   Do we create a section for this on our site, or do we wait and see how this plays out?  Personally, i am opting for the latter as there are far too many questions yet to be answered.   As always, it will be interesting.
