Captain Cloud and the Rainbow Telegraph

Captain Cloud and the Rainbow Telegraph
From the early 80’s cult film, “Get Crazy” we have a series of bands who played at the fictitious Saturn Theatre (modeled after the famous Filmore East) for their 15th New Year’s Eve Show. The first act to appear in the movie was Captain Cloud, played by Howard Kaylan of the Turtles. As you might have guessed from his name, the good Captain was still immersed in the late 60’s hippie culture, but as he was a personal favorite of the Saturn’s promoter, Max Wolfe, he was a part of the show and was allowed to ring in the New Year with Auld Lang Syne.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Get Crazy (1983)

Actor:
Howard Kaylan

Songs you might remember:
Auld Lang Syne

Why you should vote for them:
It was one of those so cheesy it was good moments.

Why you should not vote for them:
Musically, he was stuck in a time warp.

Captain Bart and the Tequila Mockingbirds

Captain Bart and the Tequila Mockingbirds
In a fun look at a possible future for the Simpsons children, we see Lisa as the President of the United States, with older brother Bart as the lead of a Jimmy Buffett cover band; though they never actually directly covered Buffet to avoid paying the Margaritaville legend any royalties, so they played “Wastin’ Once More Again in Daiquiritaville”. They didn’t go far, which is surprising considering the immortal Ralph Wiggum was on tambourine.

Candy Slice and the Slicers

Candy Slice and the Slicers
Her inability to find the right movie role and her premature death rendered Gilda Radner one of the most underrated talents of her day. On Saturday Night Live, Radner gave us a Patti Smith parody, where she played Candy Slice. It was as brilliant as anything else she had ever done, and she took the character to her own live comedy album in 1979. Much like Smith herself, this is almost a cult character among early SNL fans.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
Saturday Night Live (1978-79)

Actor:
Gilda Radner

Songs you might remember:
If You Look Close
Gimme Mick

Why you should vote for her:
Gilda deserves a bit of love here; it was a great parody.

Why you should not vote for her:
So much of what Radner has done has been sadly forgotten; and this is probably not among her top five characters.

Cancer Boy

Cancer Boy
A controversial character from the Kids in the Hall film, Brain Candy, Cancer Boy was just what he sounded like: a young boy with Cancer. Played by Bruce McCullough, the character straddled the line between parody and poor taste and apparently caused Paramount (who was distributing the film) to not get behind the film. Cancer Boy may have been memorable, but was it for the right reason?

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Brain Candy (1996)

Actor:
Bruce McCullough

Songs you might remember:
Whistle When You’re Low

Why you should vote for him:
Chances are you never forgot the character.

Why you should not vote for him:
It was not much of a Rock and Roll character, and again many found it in poor taste.
