Chris Rock may never be able to carry a film, but many remember his first foray as the lead in CB4, where he led a rap group with a made up Gangsta past. The film may not have been a huge hit, but it is still remembered in the Hip Hop community and as Rock’s profile rises, this film is getting a better look. Another animated attempt to capitalize on the Bubblegum genre, the Cattanooga Cats were…well a little different than the others. Before Demi Moore’s career explodes, she was the female lead in the John Cusack vehicle where she was granted a couple of songs in the flick. Although Moore’s character is a Rock singer here, this was only a secondary part of the film and not exactly relevant to the plot line. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls may be the ultimate early 70’s guilty pleasure film because as much as it was god awful, you couldn’t turn away. The focal point of the film was the band, “The Carrie Nations”, whose music was as bleak as it was bad, but again, you couldn’t help but watch. Whether or not this makes them a serious contender is in doubt, but nostalgia is on their side.
