Andy "Champ" Purcell

Andy Champ Purcell

The Champ (1931)

Boxer

Many of you asked us why we did not include Fictional Athletes prior to 1970.  We listened and created a special Veteran’s Category, which featured fictional athletes from movies prior to 1970 and we awaited to see who all of you would pick to be the first Fictitious Athlete “Veteran” for our Hall of Fame.  Loud and clear, you all told us: It was the original “Champ”.

The original 1931 film saw it portrayed by veteran actor, Wallace Berry, who played the down on his luck alcoholic boxer to perfection, earning an Academy Award in the process.  Boxing, especially back then, was a dirty business, and this was one of the best reflections of that.

The Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame is proud to induct Andy “The Champ” Purcell as the first Veteran of the Hall!

Amos Dodd

Amos Dodd
Long before the Waterboy, we had Amos Dodd, a simple man from Texas who could throw a watermelon farther than anyone else had ever seen? Does that translate into College Football? Why of course it does, and through a strange turn of events (boy do we say that a lot), he is recruited to play for small Texas State against the powerhouse of Yale, which in 1935 was actually true. Stuart Erwin, who played Amos Dodd, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Pigskin Parade (1935)

Actor:
Stuart Erwin

Role Portrayed:
Texas State University Quarterback

Why You Should Vote For Him:
If you go by what you saw on the field, this was the guy that led the team to a huge win over Yale (when beating Yale mattered).

Why You Should Not Vote For Him:
The Coach’s daughter calling the winning play? Come one, man!

Sue Sylvester

Sue Sylvester
None of us here at Notinhalloffame understood the Glee phenomenon, nor do any of us subscribe that cheerleading is a sport. Saying all of that we do recognize that many people liked that show, and that some feel that cheerleading is a sport. If that is true, than why not a cheerleading coach, and one who was arguably one of the stars of the show? With that we present Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) as a nominee for the Fictitious Athlete Hall, and whether you think she belongs or not, you have to admit that Lynch is one funny actress.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
Glee (2009-)

Actor:
Jane Lynch

Role Portrayed:
Cheerleading Coach

Why You Should Vote For Her:
Many have argued that this was the best character on the show.

Why You Should Not Vote For Her:
It’s a cheerleading coach! That is all that we need to say.

Terry "The Cannon" Gannon

Terry 22The Cannon22 Gannon
Back in the Game was not a very good television show, nor was it even a very good Bad News Bears rip off. There was a band of misfit kids who played Baseball, but unlike the Bears, the Angles (yes, not Angels) we barely saw them play. The only highlight for us was James Caan as a drunken former Baseball player named Terry “The Cannon” Gannon, who is one old man we don’t want to mess with. We love Caan, and find that he usually steals the show, but it wasn’t that hard for him to accomplish that feat here.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
Back in the Game (2013)

Actor:
James Caan

Role Portrayed:
Former Baseball Player/Assistant Little League Coach

Why You Should Vote For Him:
Caan is an icon. That’s all we got.

Why You Should Not Vote For Him:
This show lasted only 10 episodes.

Sonny Weaver Jr

Sonny Weaver Jr
First off let’s all agree that the transition from athlete to administrator in the Kevin Costner fictitious sports world was one that seems natural, and we all buy. Do you believe Costner as Sonny Weaver Jr., the GM of the Cleveland Browns? Of course you do! It is Costner!

Here is the problem. The draft day trades make absolutely no sense, and there is literally no way that these moves would occur. Two points on the above: Yes that is the correct use of the word literally and we do remember the New Orleans Saints trading their entire draft class to move up one spot to get Ricky Williams. That would never happen again!

On the other hand, is the genius of Costner just that strong that maybe he could have pulled that off?

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Draft Day (2013)

Actor:
Kevin Costner

Role Portrayed:
General Manager of the Cleveland Browns

Why You Should Vote For Him:
Costner is a legend on this website.

Why You Should Not Vote For Him:
There is absolutely no logic to the moves in this film.

Paul Ashworth

Paul Ashworth
In the original British (and superior) film, Fever Pitch, we are introduced to Paul Ashworth, a diehard Arsenal fan who is forced to modify his love of his beloved Premiership team with that of his new girlfriend. We are fans of the “Gunners” here, so we had to make sure this made the ballot. Seriously, anyone but Liverpool!

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Fever Pitch (1997)

Actor:
Colin Firth

Role Portrayed:
Arsenal superfan

Why You Should Vote For Him:
Only if you can identify with superfandom.

Why You Should Not Vote For Him:
Whether you saw this or not, does a fan really belong in the Hall?

Ah, the stalker. Not exactly the best “contributor” per say, but one that is a common in modern sports and will probably fuel future sports, we have the “obsessed fan”. At least here in the 2002 attempted horror film, “Swimfan”, we have a nominee that is borderline hot. Seriously, that is all we got!

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Swimfan (2002)

Actor:
Erika Christensen

Role Portrayed:
Obsessed Swim fan

Why You Should Vote For Her:
Not really sure. Well, she was cute.

Why You Should Not Vote For Her:
If Robert DeNiro is struggling to get inducted as an obsessed fan, should we really look at this one seriously?

Lynn Wells

Lynn Wells
As we have stated, we are not always the biggest fans of “girlfriends” in sports movies, but we will say that we did enjoy Rene Russo, as Lynn Wells, a past girlfriend of Jake Taylor (Tom Bereneger) who at least has to be wooed back. We will also say that this was Rene Russo at the apex of her hotness.

The Bullet Points:
Movies Appeared:
Major League (1989)
Major League 2 (1994)

Actor:
Rene Russo

Role Portrayed:
Former Girlfriend of Indians Catcher, Jake Taylor

Why You Should Vote For Her:
She was very hot in this role at this time.

Why You Should Not Vote For Her:
If she wasn’t in the film, how much difference would it have made?

Every boxing movie needs a trainer right? Following in the vein of Mickey Goldmill, Rocky…er…Razor Sharp’s trainer is a crusty old codger, though this one has a better sense of humor. What that means for this Hall isn’t a whole lot, as the film will likely struggle to get an inductee of any kind.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Grudge Match (2013)

Actor:
Alan Arkin

Role Portrayed:
Boxing Trainer

Why You Should Vote For Him:
Arkin was likable, and knows how to nail the curmudgeon with the heart of gold as well as anyone.

Why You Should Not Vote For Him:
Arkin has playing this type of role for years.

Jane Aubrey

Jane Aubrey
Generally, we don’t include girlfriends as potential Contributors, but since “For Love of the Game” is half RomCom and half sports films, we thought this was worth a nomination.

Although we personally far preferred the intricacies of Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) on the mound, the relationship between Chapel and Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston) was half of the movie, and since she was billed second in what was a respected sports film, she deserves a nomination. Also, we want to throw her a bone for being the beard for Travolta for so many years.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
For Love of the Game (1999)

Actor:
Kelly Preston

Role Portrayed:
Girlfriend

Why You Should Vote For Her:
We’ll say this; she was one of the better girlfriends, or at least one of the most multi-dimensional in terms of character.

Why You Should Not Vote For Her:
It’s a girlfriend role. That is probably not what a lot of people think that this Hall of Fame should be about.
