Hulk Hogan’s first leading role…..well, it should have been his last. As campy as “No Holds Barred” was (it has veered into that strange ‘so bad it is must watch like a car crash) it has sadly become the Godfather II of Hogan’s overall body of work. There is no point going into too much detail here. Hulk Hogan played “Rip”, who coincidentally was a professional wrestler who is the top star of a cable network, and is being courted by an “evil” owner of rival network…..and wait a minute, are we discussing the “plot” here? We will finish by saying that in the film, Hulk made someone piss their pants, avenged his brother, defeated a larger opponent and appears to have killed the evil network owner at the end. Now that’s how a “Real American” solves a problem. It may have felt at times that Ricardo “Go Go” Gomez was a token Latino on the White Shadow, but as this was an inner city High School in Los Angeles, the question was how come there wasn’t more representation from the Hispanic community on the show. Overall, the character of Ricardo “Go Go” Gomez was not the best one on the show, and frankly its portrayer (Ira Augustain) was a mediocre actor. Although Gomez was written inconsistently in comparison to some of the others, it was good to show a Hispanic face on Prime Time when few were shown at the time (Charo’s appearances on the Love Boat don’t count). Does this type of trailblazing account for an induction here? “The Wrestler” does not have that happy ending that most professional wrestling matches have. Actually, it has that ending that sadly mimicked the life of many pro wrestlers. It is not a film that appeals to only wrestling fans, but a dramatic masterpiece that was the most acclaimed of the year (2008) and justifiably gained a mass audience. “The Wrestler” in question was Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mickey Rourke) whose best days were at least two decades behind him and was living a shell of existence to satisfy the only thing he really knows. If this Hall of Fame is to be based on great performances than it seems difficult to see “The Ram” out of this cyber-establishment for long. Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy should have been a golf superstar, but lacked the ambition; until he was pissed off by Don Johnson and wanted to beat him at the U.S. Open and land Rene Russo in the process. As always Kevin Costner (McAvoy) plays a fictitious athlete brilliantly and unlike Crash Davis, who had the drive but not the talent, McAvoy was talented but lacked the drive. What stood out the most in this film was his 12 on the 18th hole, where after attempt after attempt he tried to shoot the ball over the water hazard instead of playing it safe. He cost himself a chance at the Open, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process, yet it was far more memorable than had he won in a playoff.
