RIP: Dusty Rhodes
It is a sad day in the world of professional wrestling as it was announced by the WWE that Hall of Famer and former multi time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, passed away today at the age of 69.  Rhodes was still employed with the WWE at the time of his passing assisting with the younger talents in the developmental system and he had made multiple appearances on Monday Night Raw over the past few years. 



Rhodes first gained prominence as one half of the Texas Outlaws with Dick Murdoch, where they would become one of the world’s top tag teams.  After striking out on his own, he would become a major star in Florida and would eventually be a three time champion in the National Wrestling Alliance with notable feuds against Harley Race and Ric Flair.  In the late 80’s, Rhodes would have his last major run in wrestling with the WWF, peaking with a mixed tag team win over Randy Savage at Wrestlemania VI.



“The American Dream” still worked in wrestling for WCW and the WWE in booking and administrative capacities and two of his sons, Cody and Dustin would become champions themselves.

There has been a lot of negativity surrounding the Ultimate Warrior, and honestly a lot of it is justified. His detractors point to his lack of wrestling ability and incoherent interviews. They are right, as the vast majority of his matches were not wrestling clinics and more often than not, you really didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. With all of that said, there was a huge population of wrestling fans that made the Ultimate Warrior one of the most popular wrestlers of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Tonight on the tapings of Friday Night Smackdown, it was announced that Carlos Colon will be entering the WWE Hall of Fame.  Colon debuted in professional wrestling in 1966, but citing a need for a solid promotion in his native Puerto Rico, he co-created, the World Wrestling Council, which would become a major promotion.

Colon would become the promotion’s champion multiple times, and his decades long feud with Abdullah the Butcher is still legendary on the Caribbean Island.  In 1983, it appeared to the WWC faithful that he won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Ric Flair when he defeated Flair in San Juan, however this was not recognized by the NWA, and Carlos was referred to as the “Universal” Champion in Puerto Rico from then on.

In regards to the WWE, Colon’s highest profile appearance was as a participant in the 1993 Royal Rumble.  Since our website’s inception, Colon has been lodged in the top twenty of those who should be considered for the WWE Hall of Fame.

Carlos Colon is the father of former WWE Superstar, Carlito, and the father and nephew of Los Matadors, who formerly wrestled as Primo and Epico.  We congratulate Carlos on this honor.

It is virtually impossible to watch WWE programming without seeing a second (or even third) generation performer.  As of this writing, thirteen members of the current roster have a parent who competed as a professional wrestler, and there is a lot of indication that this number will grow.  Florida Championship Wrestling (the training ground for the WWE) has many more second generation sports entertainers waiting to continue the legacies put forth by their parents.
