Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem first made their debut on television in 1975 on a show you probably don’t remember; The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence but it was their role as the house band on The following Muppet Show, which is where they really took a foothold in the fictional band world.
Over the five seasons that the Muppets were on the air, Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem weren’t just the house band but would appear in multiple numbers and backstage sketches. The group would also be in all of the Muppet Movies and the recent reboot. Perhaps what is most interesting is that the group, who were clearly modeled after 1970’s characters do not seem dated, even though their influences clearly are.
Let’s take a look at the band!
Animal (Drums). While it is uncertain just which famous drummer that the wild coiffed muppet is based on, there is no doubt that he was the “breakout” character of the group. Animal was as wild as his name suggested and he could best be described as primitive, albeit in the most adorable way.
Dr. Teeth (Keyboards). The leader of the band comes complete with a lone gold tooth and fur vest is certainly Woodstock ready but is he out of place in the hipster environment? The character is based on New Orleans legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. John.
Floyd Pepper (Bass). Dr. Teeth might be the leader, but it is Floyd Pepper who often is tasked as the lead singer. With his name and look, Pepper is a clear homage to the late 60’s Rock, which is arguably a stull popular genre of music today.
Janice (Lead Guitar). Clearly inspired by Janis Joplin, though looking more like Joni Mitchell, Janice is the ditzy yet talented flower child of the group.
Zoot (Saxophone). The band’s elder statesmen, the balding and somewhat melancholy saxophone player may have seen it all in the fictional music world and continues to tell the tale.
