RIP Al Davis

Football Hall of Famer, Al Davis passed away today at the age of 82.  Davis may be remembered solely by younger fans as the goofy looking, eccentric indicidual who may have let the game pass him by, but older fans remember Davis as one of the most powerful figures in Football who helped facilitate the AFL-NFL merger.  Davis' Raiders were at one time the "cool" team to cheer for, and their renegade image was essentially that of Davis himself.  This is the Al Davis that we will remember today, and somewhere he is putting together a team above saying "just win, baby".

The Importance of Batting Titles

Generally, we are a very positive website, but we will take a 180 and trash Jose Reyes for the way he bowed out of fully completing for a Batting Title today.  Reyes took himself out of today's game after he successfully bunted on base, making it easier for him to win the Batting Crown, thus making us wonder aloud if he had an incentive in his contract for that, and if so, will he buy a set of balls.

Here is are other question.  With the increase push on Sabremetrics, will it come soon that is more important to win th On Base Percentage Title?  Doesn't yet have the same ring yet does it?  For the record, Reyes finished 8th in the OBP race in the NL, 32 points behind Joey Votto of the Reds.  Should this hold more importance than it already does, and does winning the Batting Title hold as much weight as it used to?  Of course for ths site, we ask how much importance this should hold for the Hall of Fame.  For us, and hopefully HOF voters, they will remember how Jose Reyes won his Title today.

A Look at the 2012 Rock and Roll HOF Nominations

Well gang here it is....     Every Year we debate the nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and we suspect that it will be no different this year as once again it has been very interesting.   If there is a pattern, it is definitley that this is the "Year of the Woman", as a plethora of fenmale candidates have been nominated.

Let's take a look at them, shall we?

#5 The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Nominated again, we would not be surprised if they got in.  Even if they don't this is just a matter of time and we defy anyone to make a solid case as to why they shouldn't get in.

#8 The Beastie Boys

Very much the same situation as the Chili Peppers, the Beasties have been nominated before and there would be no shock to seem get their due.  Obviously, with our high rank, we would be totally fine with this induction.

#13 The Cure

We are absolutly thrilled with this nomination!   This was a band (much like the Smiths) that we thought would never really receive a serious look.  A major win for the 80's Alternative Sound, we are very curious to see if they get in.  We are hoping for it, as we suspect that this may be their only real shot.

#15 Guns 'N' Roses

No surpise here.  This was our highest rated act in their first year of eligibility, and if the Rock Hall got a sniff of a possibilty that both Axl and Slash would appear, this could be a sure thing.

#33 Heart

Another one we love!  If the Hall wants hard rocking women, they would be hard pressed to do better than the Wilson sisters who also have a lot of success to boot.  Very possible induction.

#57 War

Again, another group who have been nominated before, but their just may too many intruiging candidates.  We have a suspicion they wont be "freinds" with the Hall this year.

#59 Small Faces/#131 Faces

We had them seperated based on the difference between the two groups in terms of musical style, but we have no problem with this as a joint nomination. Any respect paid to the Small Faces is fine with us!

#61 Donna Summer

She is the lone Disco act nominated, but she has been here before.  With other powerful female acts on the nomination ballot, she is likely to get turned down this year.

#76 The Spinners

We would be thrilled if they got in.  Philly Soul has not overly represented by the Hall, this would be a great place to look for another inductee.  With a long and winding career, it would be great way to cap it.

#77 Eric B. & Rakim

The Hall has shown that they want to honor Rap artists, and this would be a great choice.  Could they cancel out the Beasties though?

#108 Donovan

The eccentric folk star is back, but without any real momentum from the last process, we are skeptical of his chances.

#157 Laura Nyro

She's Back!  For the third year in a row, Laura Nyro appears on the ballot but we suspect she will "Susan Lucci" it up and go 0 for 3

#159 Rufus with Chaka Khan

It's possible that they could sneak in, but their overall body of work does not measure up to some of the others here.  We would be shocked if they got in.

#174 Joan Jett

A very good chance, especially based on the exposure that the Runaways have received recently.  Honestly, we would rather she gets in with them.

#355 Freddie King

Our lowest ranked artist is a great Blues Man, but in a ballot with nobody else like him, he could sneak in.

So what's missing?  Well other than Rush, KISS and others, this nomination group has no representatives from Heavy Metal or Progressive Rock.  These are two genres that are most closely defined my many as Rock and Roll and it was passed over again.

You know our thoughts....  Let's here yours!

R.E.M. disbands

You could say it is in an end of an era.  The Georgia based band, R.E.M. have called it a career after 31 long years.  The Hall of Fame band was one of the most important Alternative bands in the 80's, and by that decade's end was one of the most popular ones too.  They leave behind a legacy of timeless hits, introspective lyrics and a diverse body of work.  We thank them for the music, and it is not the end of the world....in fact we feel fine.

Mike Modano Retires from Hockey

Canada may be the land of Hockey, but the United States has produced some excellent players too.  Mike Modano retired today as the the man who holds the record for the most Goals, Games Played, Playoff Points and Points scored by an American born player.

Modano also goes down as the all time leading scorer for the Dallas Stars franchise.  The Multi-time All Star never won any Individual trophies, but was jobbed out of the Calder when Sergei Makarov (who had already played for years in the Soviet Union) won the annual award for the best Rookie in the NHL.  He also had the honor of winning the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999.  In regards to Dallas, Modano is credited by many for popularizing the icy sport to Texas.

Modano will retire in the top 25 in career scoring, but has done so without hitting the century mark, and only topping 40 goals once.  Without a dominant season, he may not be considered a first ballot entry, but he is likely to find enshrinement in Toronto eventually.

Mariano Rivera sets the All Time Save Record

We here at notinhalloffame congratulate Mariano Rivera for setting the All Time Saves record.  Relievers don't always get the credit they deserve and some (Lee Smith) have struggled to get Hall of Fame support.  We don't think that will be an issue for Rivera and think there is a good shot that he will get in on the first ballot.

Hypothetically Speaking: Carson Palmer

Gang, I want to throw this out.... Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback does not seem to be budging on his desire not to play there and would rather retire.  At the age of 31, Palmer proved to be a decent QB, but failed to lead the Bengals deep into a post season.  While two Pro Bowls and 154 Touchdowns is a good career, it does not seem like a Hall of Fame one.  If his career is over, has he even done enough to sniff out top 100 when eligible?  We have our opinion, would love to hear yours!

Sidney Crosby...... Over and Out?

NHL training camps are in full swing, and Pittsburgh Penguins superstar, Sidney Crosby is not among the participants.  He has yet to fully recover from the concussion suffered at last year's Winter Classic.  We have seen what concussions have done to athletes in various sports, and it is possible that Crosby will never be the same again.

Hypothetically, if Crosby is finished, is he a Hall of Famer?  He has already won everything worth winning, capturing the Hart Trophy, the Stanley Cup and the Olympic Gold Medal.  Let's say he comes bacl and is just an average player for the nexy ten years; is that a Hall of Fame career?

Hall of Fame aside, what of the state of Hockey marketing?  Here is what we mean....beyond Crosby, the only major star is Alex Ovechkin.  Sure Steve Stamkos is an amazing player, but he is largely anonymous to most casual sports fans.  Clearly Hockey is looking at the Sidney Crosby situation as a catalyst to help prevent concussions.  Hopefully this also sparks them to try to market their stars.
