The Artists

The Brady Bunch Kids

Maybe we should have nominated them as the “Silver Platters”, which was the name that the Brady Bunch kids called themselves when they competed on the Pete Sterne Amateur Hour, in the hope that they could win the $100 prize money so that they could purchase an engraved silver platter for their parent’s anniversary. They didn’t win (they lost to poodles….seriously they lost to poodles), but we wager a lot more people remember their lip-synched songs by the Bradys than any dog show. The “band” would reappear a couple more times in the run of the series. The Bullet Points:…

The Brothers Brothers

A Smothers Brothers parody (though the actual Smothers Brothers apparently provided the singing voices), The Brothers Brothers was a pair of singers oblivious to the fact they were black, which was essentially the running gag. Played by Keenan Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans on “In Living Colour”, the sketch was always good for a laugh, but the music was not exactly special. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: In Living Colour (1990-91) Actors: Damon Wayans Keenan Ivory Wayans Songs you might remember: None Why you should vote for them: This is a chance to respect a very good sketch comedy…

The Bugaloos

A somewhat bizarre creation from the Sid and Marty Kroft (though weren’t they all?), the Bugaloos were a seventeen episode series that featured a musical group who lived in “Tranquility Forest”. They wore insect themed outfits and had the ability to fly, which means….well, we have no idea. Either way, this was hot for a brief moment, which is enough to get them on our ballot. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: The Bugaloos (1970-72) Actors: Wayne Laryea (Harmony, a Bumblebee) John Philpott (Courage, a Ladybug) Caroline Ellis (Joy, a Butterfly) John McIndoe (I.Q., a Grasshopper) Songs you might remember:…

The California Raisins

Sometimes, you never know what will become a hit. In the late 1980’s the California Raisin Advisory Board created a hit commercial of anthropomorphic raisins that sang old Rhythm & Blues. Actually, it was a phenomenon, which spawned a TV show, merchandise and even a video game. Who knew that a cover “Heard it Through the Grapevine” could do so well? The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Meet the Raisins! (1989) Actors: Singing Voice: Buddy Miles Songs you might remember: Heard it Through the Grapevine Why you should vote for them: This was a very successful advertising campaign Why you…

The Carrie Nations

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls may be the ultimate early 70’s guilty pleasure film because as much as it was god awful, you couldn’t turn away. The focal point of the film was the band, “The Carrie Nations”, whose music was as bleak as it was bad, but again, you couldn’t help but watch. Whether or not this makes them a serious contender is in doubt, but nostalgia is on their side. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) Actors: Dolly Read (Kelly Macnamara) Cynthia Myers (Casey Anderson) Marcia McBroom (Petronella Danforth) Songs you…

The Cattanooga Cats

Another animated attempt to capitalize on the Bubblegum genre, the Cattanooga Cats were…well a little different than the others. Perhaps it was the subtle psychedelic feel the music had (even though it was Country based), or maybe that is what we were on when we watched it. Actually, that was probably it. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: The Cattanooga Cats (1969-71) Actors: Bill Callaway (Country, Lead Singer and Guitarist) Julie Bennett (Kitty Jo, Singer and Dancer) Jim Begg (Scoots, Bass) Casey Kasem (Groove, Drums) Songs you might remember: Surprisingly…none Why you should vote for them: This was considered a…

The Chan Clan

In another that almost slipped through the cracks, The Chan Clan were the children of the “Amazing” Charlie Chan, the first animated series in North America, with an Asian cast. The older five kids of Charlie Chan, not only helped their super sleuth dad solve mysteries, but in perfect early 70’s expectations, they had a Bubblegum Pop band. Incidentally, the lead was sang by Ron Dante, who was the lead for the Archies. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan (1972) Actors: Multiple voices used. Ron Dante did the lead vocals Songs you might…

The Cheetah Girls

You have to hand it to Disney, who created fabricated act after fabricated act. The one in question here is the Cheetah Girls, headlined by Raven Symone, which generated a series of Disney TV Movies. Was it good? Not really, but it did generate a lot of viewers, sales of their products and was a success in general. That in itself places it stories ahead of many of the others on the ballot.   The Bullet Points: Movies Appeared: The Cheetah Girls (2003) The Cheetah Girls 2 (2006) The Cheetah Girls 3 (2008) Actors: Raven Symone (Galleria “Bubbles” Garibaldi) Adrienne Ballon…

The Chesterfields

From the tribute film to the spirit of Rock and Roll, American Hot Wax, we have the Chesterfields who were a fictionalized version of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. The film’s rock stars were half people who played themselves and half made up bands, which may make these fictional entries from the film muddled at best, and long shots for entry. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: American Hot Wax (1978) Actors: Carl Earl Weaver Al Chalk Sam Harkness Arnold McCuller Songs you might remember: Why Do Fools Fall in Love? Why you should vote for them: This is from a…

The Chipettes

So what do you do when you have a successful franchise? You create a female version. The result of course, is a watered down (and frankly unnecessary) replica, but they probably have more recorded songs then your favorite bar band. The Bullet Points: Movie and TV Shows Appeared: Alvin and the Chipmunks (1983-90) Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009) Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011) Actors: Multiple voices used. Songs you might remember: Nothing really… Why you should vote for them: Until Alvin and the Chipmunks get in, this should never be considered. Why you should not vote for…

The Christers

Never Been Thawed was an eccentric independent film, but had it not been for this quirky piece of cinema, we would never have been introduced to the “Bad Boys of Christian Rock”, The Christers. Before becoming the Christers, they were the “Reacharounds” a Punk band who pose as a Christian Rock band to score funds to complete their album. Basically, they sell out, as generating money for wholesome music was a lot easier, though we enjoyed the oddball characters that surrounded the film even more than the band. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Never Been Thawed (2004) Actors: Shawn Anderson…

The Clash at Demonhead

The very successful rival band of Scott Pilgrim was made up of one of his ex girlfriends and a telekinetic bassist who was dating that aforementioned ex. Rather than go into the convoluted plot, let’s just say that the band’s music was provided by the very talented band, Metric, which is more than enough to make them a serious contender for this Hall of Fame. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) Actors: Brie Larson (Envy Adams, Lead Singer) Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram, Bass) Tennessee Thomas (Lynette Lycott, Drums) Songs you might remember: Black Sheep Why…

The Commitments

The Commitments was the BAFTA Award winner for the Film of the Year in 1991 and has been called by many critics and fans to be the greatest film of all time from Ireland. The story is a simple one, with a unique concept; a Dubliner sets out to put together the best Soul band and manage them to greatness, though this group turns out to be an all white outfit. It is a clash of egos, a clash of cultures and overall a great film with excellent music. Should we obtain a serious audience from the Eastern side of…

The Country Bears

Unlike The Pirates of the Caribbean, the Country Bears did not spawn sequels, did not generate positive reviews and was not a box office success. Still, there was a segment that found the film cute, and it did have a very strong cast. This might generate a few surprise votes here and there; or it might not. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Country Bears (2002) Actors: Diedrich Bader (voice) John Hiatt (singing) (Ted Bedderhead, lead singer) Haley Joel Osment (voice) Elizabeth Daily (singing) Beary Barrington Candy Ford (voice) Bonnie Raitt (singing) (Trixie St. Claire, keyboards, vocals) Toby Huss (voice)…

The Cross Fires

From the underappreciated concept album (The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands) by the Turtles we have an albums where different “bands” appeared. This allowed the group to not only stretch their skills musically, as each “band” had a completely different sound and also showcase their humor. As the “Cross Fires” the Turtles were able to tap into the surf sound that dominated the airwaves a few years previous. Like everything else on this album, the band created a fun song, though what would you expect from a band called the Turtles covering one of the most infectious musical…

The Culps

Following in the SNL tradition of Nick the Lounge Singer and the Sweeney Sisters we have the Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer as Marty and Bobbi-Mohan Culp. They were music teachers whose prim and proper appearance looked perfect for their whitewashed medley of current pop songs. During their sets, they try to give inspirational messages, which are not exactly received well, as shown by the vast amount of middle fingers they receive the teenage audience.           The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Saturday Night Live (1996-2002) Actors: Will Ferrell (Marty Culp) Ana Gasteyer (Bobbi Mohan-Culp) Songs you might remember: None…

The Dale Gribble Bluegrass Experience

The animated gang in Arlen, Texas began jamming with their pre-teen neighbor, Kahn "Kahnie" Souphanousinphone, who has found that Bluegrass is a lot more fun than her classically trained violin skills. Feeling that they were good enough to enter the 15th Annual Old Time Fiddle Festival in Branson, Hank, Dale, Boomhauer, Bill and Kahnie travel there to compete, though the young fiddler found that Hank was just as demanding as her own father, thus taking all the fun out of the music.    Naturally she is replaced by fiddling legend, Charlie Daniels, and somehow the mush mouthed Boomhauer has a singing…

The Dalton Academy Warblers

We might have to rely on the help of the Glee fans on this one. We admit to not knowing that much about the Glee phenomenon, but we are aware that is was pretty big at one time. As such, one of the main opponents for the William McKinley High Glee Club has to be considered a contender here; especially considering the Warblers actually had an album that went to number 2 on Billboard. Seriously, that did happen. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Glee (2010-) Actors: Darren Criss (Blaine) Chris Colfer (Kurt) Telly Leung (Wes) Dominic Barnes (Trent) Curt…

The Darlings

Initially, we were not going to nominate the Darling Boys who had a multiple episodes on the Andy Griffith Show in the 60’s, but if we have the Dale Gribble Bluegrass Experience on the ballot, we have to include a group from a far more successful show, which was played by a real Bluegrass Band (The Dillards). Besides, as you may have noticed we love the cheese factor, and with Denver Pyle (the future Uncle Jesse from the Dukes of Hazzard) occasionally playing the jug to help out, we think this elevates them a notch. The Bullet Points: TV Show…

The Doodlebops

You will have to forgive us, as we have never really seen this show as nobody amongst us has small kids. Still, here is what we have learned: The Doodlebops had a decent run on Canadian Television, got picked up by Disney and are successful enough to do a tour of their music. That makes them a viable in our eyes regardless of whether we know them or not. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: The Doodlebops (2004-) Actor: Lisa Lennox (Deedele Doodle) Chad McNamara (Rooney Doodle) Jonathan Wexler (Moe Doodle)   Songs you might remember: Get on the Bus Why…

The Dreams

Specifically the version from the movie version of Dreamgirls, The Dreams were the Diana Ross and the Supremes knockoff that gave us a cast that gave us an Academy Award Winner (Jennifer Hudson) and one of the biggest musical stars ever (Beyonce). Hudson won the Oscar, but overall the trio was brilliant and was a version worth considering for this Fictitious Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.     The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Dreamgirls (2006) Actors: Beyonce Knowles (Gino Minnelli, Guitar) Jennifer Hudson (Martha Spino, Vocals) Anika Noni-Rose (Morris Weiner, Keyboards) Songs you might remember: Dreamgirls And I am Telling…

The Dregs of Humanity

Jason Bateman’s first shot in a leading role was in a pre Ferris Beuller role as a young con man in a 1984 Sitcom, It’s Your Move. The show only lasted one season, but it is still a favorite among many for the era, and when it is discussed, usually it is the “Dregs of Humanity” who are referenced. The Dregs were actually science class skeletons that Bateman put together to appear at the school dance after his dufus friend (Eli) lost the money to hire the original band. With fog, lights, lots of string and prerecorded Heavy Metal, the…

The Electric Shoes

Another brief TV band with limited skill, The Electric Shoes was Kevin Arnold’s first (and only) attempt to be a Rock Star. Joining up with the new kid in town from California, the Garage rockers scored a gig at a 7th grade birthday party which lasted all of five seconds. The band broke up a week later. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: The Wonder Years (1990) Actors: Fred Savage (Kevin Arnold) Nobody else worth remembering Songs you might remember: Nothing Why you should vote for them: The attempted Rock Star in all of us can identify with the “Electric…
