Pearl Jam

If Nirvana were the Beatles of grunge, then Pearl Jam were the Rolling Stones.

The band that was originally named Mookie Blaylock, would be the largest beneficiary of the grunge movement, and of the genre easily the most principled.  Perhaps the embodiment of American music for decades, Pearl Jam would become a huge band, but arguably could have been more successful had they “played by the rules”.

392. Kyuss

Considered the pioneers of Stoner Metal, Kyuss developed an earthy type of Metal that had the traditional aggression associated with Metal but with a spaced out feel.  This Alternative form of Metal was unique and gave them critical love and a solid fan base, but it failed to generate any significant album sales.  As unique as they were, it was a difficult band to imitate and it still trying to be sorted out just how influential they really were.  Should members of this band get in, it would be from with Queens of the Stone Age.

352. Cypress Hill

As the first Latin Hip Hop group of note, Cypress Hill’s first two albums featured a slowed up groove with pounding basses that could almost be described as a Stoner Groove.  This sound proved to be influential on other Hip Hop artists that followed and their sound was a true alternative to other West Coast rappers.  The problem was that their later effort was substantially weaker almost to point of self-parody.  For Cypress Hill to have a realistic chance for induction, the amount of artists who cite them as influential will have to substantially increase.

275. Boyz II Men

In terms of commercial success, Boyz II Men are the most successful R&B group of all-time, and based on what they drew from, it was easy to see why.  Coming from Philadelphia, the quartet took that soul sound, infused a bit of Detroit, but more importantly built on the New Jack Swing movement that was already popular.  The group used every portion of their vocal range (which was a lot) and they owned the 1990’s.

224. Aphex Twin

Known on his birth certificate as Richard James, Aphex Twin had received the high praise of being called one of the most influential and innovative figures in contemporary Electronic music.  The high acclaim was earned as Aphex Twin pushed the envelope of Acid and Ambience and took the Electronic genre to places never before thought.  The question (as with many other Electronic based performers) is whether the Hall will ever choose to recognize this musical style.

413. The (Dixie) Chicks

They may have started out as a Bluegrass band, but they evolved into one of the most successful and controversial Country music bands of all time.  They found new success when they added the Pop sound to their traditional Country and with deep thought provoking lyrics they were unique to both Country and Pop.  Considering the political issues they faced in the past, and that they are group with conservative leaning tendencies, this is a band that is far from anything traditional in the Country world.

198. Ween

It always seemed like Ween was deliberately odd and thrived in producing material that had an Andy Kaufamnesque quality to it.  Their ironic songs gained them fans who reveled in the joking atmosphere and the seemingly self contained world that Ween created.  They never really got past the Underground scene but it is doubtful that they wanted to try to be anything remotely mainstream anyway.  This is not exactly a Hall of Fame resume, but they likely don’t care, and neither would their fans, of which they developed a more loyal following than more than half of the bands who actually got into the Rock and Roll Hall.

245. The Black Crowes

A straight up Bluesy Rock band in a time when that was not in vogue, the Black Crowes echoes the Classic Rock bands of the past and were a breath of fresh air to those tired of the made up Hair metal acts who were about to be phased out.   Chris Robinson and company definitely had a retro feel to it and their Southern Rock styling got them airplay on Rock stations across the country.  Had their success in the 90’s carried over into the new millennium their Hall of Fame chances would have improved.  As such they are a wild card shot at best when they are eligible.
