  • Playing 26 seasons in the NHL, Chelios was not just a long-tenured hockey player; he was a star. Winning the Norris Trophy three times as the NHL's best defenseman, Chelios was also a five-time first team all-star and scored 948 points. Tough as nails, Chelios had no problem fighting when needed, and his ability to play make, defend, check and fight made him one of the most popular players in the game’s history.

Chelios was a natural leader, and when the NHL adopted the Mark Messier Leadership award in 2006-07, Chelios was the inaugural recipient. A three-time Stanley Cup champion (one with the Montreal Canadiens and two with the Detroit Red Wings), Chelios was a vital cog in the Americans' win the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

We are proud to nominate Chris Chelios for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
