  • In the early days of baseball, managers were often players, or at least were player/managers when they first donned the role of the skipper. This was not the case for Frank Selee, who never played on the major league level and only had sparse experience as a minor league ballplayer.

Selee did not require the experience as a player to know what he was doing. He built a team around small ball tactics, with his players expertly executing bunts and double steals. Selee managed for 16 seasons, the first dozen with the Boston Beaneaters (1890-1901), where he won five National League pennants. He would take over the reins in Chicago for four years after, though illness forced him to prematurely step down in 1905. Chicago went on to win that year's World Series.

We are proud to nominate Frank Selee for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
