  • Bill Self began his head coaching career at Oral Roberts in 1993, where over four years, he took the team from six to 21 wins and an appearance in the NIT. Tulsa was next for Self, a three-year run where in his third year, he led the Golden Hurricane to an appearance in the Elite Eight. With two successful program elevations under his belt, the bigger leagues would naturally come calling. That team was Illinois.

Like his stays at Oral Roberts and Tulsa, Self was only with the Fighting Illini for three years, but in each year, Illinois won at least 25 games and won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament. Illinois was a good team, but Kansas was basketball country. He joined them in 2003.

To date, Self has never had a year in Kansas where his team had less than 23 games and didn't win at least one game in the NCAA Tournament. Self would eight times guide Kansas to the Elite Eight and cut down the final net in 2007. Since his arrival, the Jayhawks have dominated the Big 12, and he has won 15 conference regular seasons, eight Big 12 tournaments, and five Big 12 Coach of the Year Awards.

Self is still the Jayhawks head coach, and considering he is under 60; there is a lot left that he can accomplish.

We are proud to nominate Bill Self for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
