  • Nick Saban’s first year as a head coach was with Toledo in 1990, a single year where he won the Mid-American Conference. Saban left the Rockets for the nearby Cleveland Browns as their defensive coordinator. The four years he spent there would be the last where he was subservient to anyone on the coaching ladder.

Saban took over at Michigan State, where in five years, he brought the Spartans to four bowl games, including the Citrus Bowl in 1999, which he did not coach as he committed to taking over LSU. In the five years he ran the Tigers program, he never had less than eight wins and won the National Championship in 2003. Saban tried his hand at the NFL with a two-year run with the Miami Dolphins, but it was not a good fit, and he left with a losing 15-17 record.

Saban was hired by the University of Alabama in 2007, a role that he still has. Since his arrival, the Crimson Tide has won the National Championship seven times, and his work in Tuscaloosa resulted in the most successful program in college football in the 21st century.

We are proud to nominate Nick Saban for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
