  • The state of Wisconsin and college basketball has a common thread in Bo Ryan, one of the few coaches to excel at both Division III and Division I.

Ryan was an assistant coach at Wisconsin from 1976 to 1984, where after nine years, he finally made the jump to head coach at nearby Wisconsin-Platteville in Division III. It was a 15-year stay that yielded four Division III titles, three in the last half of the 1990s. Four titles are the level of success that gets your attention, and Ryan went to Milwaukee-Wisconsin for two years, where they had back-to-back winning seasons, a first for the Panthers in nearly a decade. Ryan was ready to go back to Wisconsin, this time as their head coach.

Ryan brought the Badgers to new heights, including their first ever #1 ranking. In the 15 years that Ryan was the head coach of Wisconsin, they went to two Final Fours, won three Big Ten tournaments, and Ryan was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year four times.

Ryan may not have won the NCAA Division I Tournament, but he elevated a basketball program in one of the toughest conferences in sports. Throw in over 700 wins, and you have a hall of fame career.

We are proud to nominate Bo Ryan for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
