Two years after leading Notre Dame to a National Championship, Joe Montana would be drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, where he took over as their starting quarterback back late in his second season. After that, Montana became the most popular and successful quarterback of the 1980s.
Montana led San Francisco to their first Super Bowl win in the 1981 season, and before the decade ended, he led them to two more and a third in 1990 (for the 1989 season). Montana gained the nickname of "Joe Cool" for his ability in the clutch and propensity to lead his team to victories late in a game.
He would finish his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and is regarded as the most accurate passer of his day.
Bluntly, there was not a more successful pivot in the 1980s than Joe Montana.
