  • Phil Mahre was already an up-and-coming skier in the U.S. system, and at age 18, he competed in the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. Mahre continued to improve, breaking out in 1980, where he won the Silver Medal at the Lake Placid Olympics in the slalom and the combined in that year’s World Championship.

Mahre then went into his apex, winning three consecutive World Cup Championships (1981-83). No American had ever won the championship before, and Mahre would rattle off three! Mahre parlayed this success into Gold at the biggest stage, the Olympics, and he left Sarajevo with a win in the slalom.

Mahre finished with 27 Word Cup wins, a record for any American at the time. He notably has a fraternal twin, Steve, who won nine races on the World Cup circuit.

We are proud to nominate Phil Mahre for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
