Tim Finchem succeeded Deane Beman as the PGA Commissioner in 1994, and he stayed in that capacity until he resigned in 2017. Finchem was fortunate to have Tiger Woods emerge as a superstar while he was in that role, and PGA earnings and its profile rose dramatically because of it. Finchem might have had that ace in the hole, but he knew how to capitalize it and keep a steady hand.
The PGA’s domestic and international growth under Finchem was unparalleled in the sport and may never be seen again.
