  • The coaching career of Joe Gibbs began in 1964 at San Diego State, where he was their offensive line coach before moving to Florida State and USC in the same capacity. Elevating to the running back coach with Arkansas, and then the St. Louis Cardinals, Gibbs ascended to the role of offensive coordinator with Tampa Bay and San Diego under Don “Air” Coryell.

What came next? A head coaching job with the Washington Redskins.

Gibbs took over in Washington in 1981, and he built his team from the offensive line out. Credited with a single back set (or often double back or triple back) to contain exploding attackers, Gibbs preferred to pound a ball through on the ground. It was an elixir that resulted in three Super Bowl wins, all done with three different quarterbacks. The two-time Coach of the Year retired from coaching in 1992, only to come back in 2004 for a four-year run, making the playoffs twice.

It is worth mentioning that upon Gibbs' retirement, he focused on NASCAR, forming Joe Gibbs Racing, and winning five NASCAR Cup Series Championships. That fact might help push Gibbs into this Hall of Fame.

We are proud to nominate Joe Gibbs for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
