  • A multi-sport athlete at the University of Miami (Ohio), Weeb Ewbank worked his way up the coaching ranks and worked under Paul Brown, first at Great Lakes Navy and then for the Cleveland Browns. His success got him hired as the head coach with the Baltimore Colts in 1954.

Initially, Ewbank’s Colts struggled, and there were calls for his dismissal. Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom stuck with Ewbank, and he built a team that would rival Paul Brown and his former employer. Rosenbloom was proven correct, as Baltimore won the 1958 and 1959 NFL Championship.

After the Colts slipped, Ewbank was let go in 1962; he took over as the New York Jets head coach. The Jets and Ewbank made history by winning the AFL Championship and shocked the world by winning Super Bowl III. This made Ewbank the only head coach to win an NFL Championship, an AFL Championship, and a Super Bowl.

We are proud to nominate Weeb Ewbank for the United States Athletic Hall of Fame.
